Introduction

TheAustralian Context Training Resource Learner Guidefor the Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32413)will assist you to developessential Australian plumbing and services knowledge.

Through a Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) approved registered training organisation (RTO) you have already been assessed by against the technical aspects of the required Australian plumbing and services units of competency and issued with an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR). Working under provisional registration with an Australian employer you can now complete the Australian Contextrequirements for essential plumbing and servicesknowledge.

Australian industry knowledge requirements include OHS, codes of practice, employment conditions and expectations, the Building and Plumbing Codes of Australia, Australian standards, safety signage and plumbing and services regulatory requirements.

The Learner Guide has been developed as part of a suite of resources and sets out the specific knowledge requirements you have to gain and the work context for applying that knowledge. Your employer can help you achieve this by providing appropriate opportunities to apply your existing technical skills in a safe and competent way while meeting Australian plumbing workplace requirements.

You must arrange aRegistered Training Organisation (RTO) to provide the necessary gap training andassessment after you have received provisionalplumbingregistration from the State or Territoryplumbing/gas regulator. The RTO will assign a trainer whowill work with you forlearning support and periodic assessment to measure your progress. A final assessment will confirm that you have gained all the essential knowledge required to be a registered plumber (journeyman) and the RTO can issue the AustralianCPC32413 Certificate III in Plumbingqualification.

The Learner Guide and CD

You will use this briefGuide and a Learner CD for self-paced learning of the essentialAustralian plumbing and servicesknowledge.

The Learner Guide CD has seven sections:

  • Section One - Introduction
  • Section Two - Working with your Employer and Trainer
  • Section Three - Occupational Health and Safety in the Australian Plumbing and Services Industry
  • Section Four- Using Work Experience Profiling Cards
  • Section Five - Australian Plumbing and Services Regulatory Requirements
  • Section Six - Australian Safety Signage
  • Section Seven - Standards for Plumbing and Gas Fitting

Each section provides information you will need to work effectively in the plumbing trade in Australia and includes some straightforwardtasks and checking questions so you can verify what you have leant and how it applies in your day-to-day work activities.

It is best to work through this Guide in the order of the sections the first time, taking whatever time you need to absorb the information and go to the indicated websites for more detail. As you progress in the workplace go to any relevant section so you can deal with each aspect of unique Australian plumbing knowledge as and when you need to.

Section Two Working with your Employer and Trainer and Section Three Occupational Health and Safety in the Australian Plumbing Industry are very important to cover as soon as possible because working safely and effectively in your new workplace is essential.

Just about everyone learns better by doing something rather than just trying to remembering lots of unrelated facts and figures. Your employer or supervisor can help you gain Australian plumbing knowledge by giving you particular work tasks where you will have to apply that knowledge.

The RTO trainer working with you will be an experienced plumbing teacher who knows what you have to achieve and can help you do so. Your employer and trainer will jointly agree a training plan that matches the necessary learning with real workplace experience. The Work Experience Profiling Cards explained in the CD will be very useful in this regard

How to use the Learner Guide

Your Learner CD will open when you insert it into the CD-ROM/DVD drive in a computer.

The CD is designed to let you progress through the seven sections at your own pace and at convenient times. You should work through each sectioncarefully to pick up the scope of the knowledge required and where to find more detail. As plumbing and servicesregulations and other workplace requirements change frequently the CD has linkstowebsites where the most current information can be obtained.

The links are blue and underlined and clicking on them should take you straight to the website. You need to have internet access to do this of course.

Some information either on the CD or from a website can be best studied or used in printed form so you will also need your computer connected to a suitable printer.

You can open the CD and go directly to any of the sections when you need to simply by clicking on that section heading at the beginning.

It is important toprogressivelycheckhow you aregoing in gaining and using the plumbingand services knowledge coveredinthe Learner Guide. So at the end of each section simple tasks and checking questions are provided for you to gauge your progress and see how well you can access and navigate the indicated industry, regulatory authority and other information websites.
