President’s Message

Welcome back to a new Chapter year!

We will start off this year’s program on 14-August with a review of two books:

I will be discussing Malcolm Gladwell’s newest book – David and Goliath:

In his newest book– Gladwell challenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages; offering a new way to think about what it means to be discriminated against, cope with a disability, lose a parent or attend a top-rated school. During the meeting, I will discuss the title of the book and why you may not want your children to attend a top-rated school.

Chuck Benfield will be discussing Ron Chernow's bookWashington: A Life:

The book is a detailed account of the Father of our country. The book is packed with fascinating facts, but more than the facts, it tells the story of his life. Of course, in the time allowed, Chuck will have to select a few of his favorite stories (sorry there is no story about chopping down a cherry tree!).

If you need to replace the rusty tools in your personal tool box, join us for upcoming programs. Save the date – 2nd Thursday of each month! Other programs scheduled for the Fall include speakers on 6-Sigma / Problem Solving and the managing editor of the APICS magazine, Elizabeth Rennie. We look forward to seeing you.

Membership News

Welcome back everyone! I hope your summer has been outstanding, and that you are ready to join us for the first PDM of the new program year. While we have taken a break since May, there has been some activity over the recent months regarding membership for Foothills. Here are the highlights……….

Latest head count for the chapter is 109 including 5 academic, 14 Enterprise, 40 Professional, 1 Retired, 13 Young Professional, & 36 Student Associates. Since our May PDM, 2 new Student Associate members joined the chapter from ASU. They are Morgan Hargett and Aaron Nelson. Also new to our chapter is Lori Bishop, CPIM. Lori recently moved to the Hickory area from MN and has been an APICS member for 17 years. She is a Purchasing Director at Homestar North America. Please welcome all aboard.

In addition, I’d like to congratulate Jeff Guthrie, Operations Manager with Acoustek. Jeff recently renewed his CPIM certification and joined Foothills after transferring from the Central Carolinas chapter. Jeff has been with APICS for 6 years.

In the month of July we had 2 members achieve a service milestone that I’d like to recognize.Keith Wilson, a Production Manager at Technibilt, celebrated 5 years with APICS. Also a former board member, Tony Stafford, CPIM, CSCP, reached his 35 year milestone for APICS membership. What an accomplishment! Earlier this year Tony accepted a position in Burlington, NC and stepped down from his board position. During the year he was active with Foothills, Tony contributed significantly to our educational activities by becoming a certified APICS trainer and offering certification classes during the program year for our members or other interested parties. We will miss him dearly.

Basics of Supply Chain Class

It’s time. Once again, it’s time to enroll in the Foothills Chapter offering of the APICS Basics of Supply Chain Management Certification Review Course. This is the first and most broadly attended of the CPIM review courses. This is the ideal education for all those who are engaged in Operations Management in any way. Supervisors, accountants, engineers, department managers, manufacturing personnel and, of course Supply Chain professionals at every level, will find many benefits of learning the material presented on this course. Knowledge is the most powerful tool we have to improve operations and processes.

You will want to enroll now to ensure that you have one of the limited seats we will have available for the course. Classes are planned to begin on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Classes will take place from 6pm to 8pm and will run for 10 weeks. This is 20 hours of instruction. Classes will be interactive and there will be many practical examples that will allow you to relate the theory to the workplace. These hours can also count toward your recertification. It is likely that classes will be held at Technibilt, located at 700 Technibilt Drive in Newton, NC. The cost of the course is $375.00 per student plus $100.00 for the student guide. Checks will be due at the first class and should be made to APICS, Foothills Chapter.

Chuck Benfield, CFPIM, and APICS certified Master Instructor will teach the class. You may enroll by contacting Chuck at . Enrollment will continue until one week before the planned start.

Back to School Supplies

The new school year is about to begin and each year our chapter serves the local community by hosting a school supply drive to help students in need. This year we have partnered with the Newton-Conover School system to help support their annual event which will be held on August 16th. They need all of the school supplies they can gather to assist students in grades K-12. This will bethe first yearNorth Carolina does not have the free tax weekend to help offset the expenses of school supplies, which will certainly impact the amount of supplies needed this year.

How can you help? During the first APICS PDM meeting on August 14th, bring in as many school supplies as you can or make a donation (cash or check) of $10 and we’ll even waive your entrance fee to the APICS meeting. Sounds like a win-win for both our community and for you!

Any school supplies will be accepted, however, a list of general supplies has been provided below for your convenience.

  • Bookbags, spiral notebooks, loose leafnotebook paper, pencils, pens, binders 1" to 2" inch, rulers,packs of markers, crayons,pocket folders, scissors,erasers, colored pencils, andbottles of glue.

The program that Newton-Conover started has been running for four consecutive years now and they have assisted approximately 500 students each year. They anticipate this number to increase this year, so let’s do our part to make sure that no students are turned away empty handed. Your contributions are greatly appreciated!
