Meeting was called to order by interim facilitator,Julie Land, in the absence of Sara Blake, on sabbatical.

Approval of Minutes from 10-13-11: minutes were approved with no changes.

Old Business:

No further information available. Cynthia Mosqueda was expected today but did not attend.

Math Dept combined classes:

The combined Math classes, known as Math 50, does not appear in the printed Spr ’12 Schedule;

it is listed on-line. In the absence of Math faculty at today’s meeting, no feedback available on the

F’11 class (Math 12 Math 23 combined). Note: Math course sections with Supplemental

Instructions also absent from printed Spr ‘12 Schedule; SI sections are listed on-line.

NewBusiness:

SRC’s Reading Brown Bag for Reading Instructors

Julie Land reported that 11-1-11SRC Brown Bag for Reading faculty went well, with eleven in attendance.

Title of presentation: Reading, the Wonder and the Challenge; ass’t facilitator was Lyn Clemons of the SRC.

Lisa Hall added another positive aspect, i.e., that a Math/Sci instructor also attended the Brown Bag.

Sara Blake's Return, Spr. ‘12:

Jason Suarez asked if BSAG was somehow becoming obsoletebut emphasized the value he gets from meeting with colleagues who understand theneed for the addition of Basic Skills instruction to course content. Techniques Jason mentioned include skimming the chapter and recognizing key components, such as intro, conclusion, overview, etc.

Jason plans to bring his History 154 class to the Reading Success Center in Spr. ’12 to use Clip Reader for class articles. Sheryl Kunisaki offered to look into possible funding for students who may need it for access to Total Reader (lexiles). This access is available for purchase in the ECC Student Store, $25, lifetime.

Support Services during W’12

Sheryl Kunisaki reported that the Reading Center will not be open during W’12; there will be no hourly casual employees. Lisa Hall announced that the LRC will have some tutoring available during W’12.
