Meeting Minutes

January 21, 2014

Attendees: Steve West, Michelle Werner, Jacque Bootz, Meghan Huss, Heather Benedict, Pete Hansen, Edana Beck, Julie Keefe, Gina Anderson, Jessie Hermus, Amy Hansen and Michelle Wright.

Michelle Werner called the meeting to order at 6:33 pm. The Pledge of Allegiance followed.

Open Forum

Principal’s Report

Mr. Miller thanked PTO for funding the purchase of the SmartBoards. 4K-6 have them. Music and World Studies will be on the list for purchase next year. Mr. Pratt and Mrs. Bergmann are certified trainers. Heather proposed that on BINGO and Raffle night, that a teacher demonstrates the SmartBoard for parents. Mr. Miller will look into and report back.

Preparing for mid-year testing for students. This will provide a guide to help with instruction to reach goals. Always searching for ways to be better.

President’s Report

Kaylee Frederickson, last year’s PTO scholarship recipient, has sent her first semester grades so PTO will issue her check within the next week. Mary Ann Knops contacted PTO regarding free stay at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel. PTO needs to complete a form for the free night. Panera Bread issued a certificate for “free bread for one year” as a donation. Still waiting to hear back from Build A Bear.

KHS sent a request to support their post graduation party. Group agreed to $100 donation.

Michelle to gather costs for field trips for the school. PTO is interesting in providing the funding

Treasurer’s Report

Missing Culver’s Elementary Night, Stevi Bs from the summary but we have received the checks.

Elementary Reps Report

BINGO and Basket Raffle Night is set for March 7. Basket themes have been assigned and notification to classes will occur on Wed Jan 22 through the newsletter and a hard copy. Items can be sent with students until February 7. Week of 2/10, basket assembly will begin. Group unanimously approved the purchase of an iPad Mini, and an iPod Touch as Grand Prize #1 and #2, respectively. Group approved $50 for a teacher/staff basket to be given away to a teacher/staff member that volunteers that night. Jacque Bootz will purchase the electronics; Julie Keefe will purchase items for the teacher/staff basket. PTO will also sponsor a “Services” basket. Any family that owns a business can donate a service to this basket. Steve proposed a room parent basket. Group discussed and agreed we don’t want to add another basket. Pete and Amy will help get the pictures of the basket on the PTO website.

Mrs. Loritz approved the extra recess for the class whose basket sells the most tickets.

The KASD raffle license that applies to ticket pre-order expires 1/31. Discussion was held regarding if we should apply for our own license. KASD has applied for renewal so it might be faster than if PTO applied (4-6 weeks). Group agreed to wait a bit to see what happens with the district license. Ticket order forms will go home with students mid February.

Group agreed to purchase 5000 tickets. Tickets will be available through pre-order and the night of the event. KHS Key Club will provide volunteers that night.

Families participating in BINGO must be 3 peanut and tree nut free candy bars or snacks to be used as prizes. There will be a door prize table and PTO will give away items from the Fun Run.

Intermediate Reps Report

Dodgeball is tentatively scheduled for March 14 in the gym from 3-4 pm. Mrs. Hermus was present and agreed that elementary phy ed would be moved to accommodate.

Fundraising

Culver’s Elementary Night netted $356. Waiting to hear about the intermediate night. Hansen’s Pizza and Cookie Dough Sale begins tomorrow (Jan 22) and runs through the 29th.The next Stevi B’s night is Feb 19. Barlow Planetarium has been contacted but no response yet.

Seroogy’s chocolate and Dunkin Donuts coffee will be sold March 19-28.

Discussed a “Dunkin Donuts” Day. They would allow us 10% of sales in a non-peak block of time. Group agreed to table for next year.

Teacher Appreciation

Preparing for intermediate parent/teacher conferences. Planning on using SignUp Genius.

New Business

Gina Anderson presented that she would like the school to consider doing something special for this year’s 6th graders and thereafter. This year’s class is the first class to complete all elementary/intermediate years at Woodland. Craig will discuss with staff and let us/her know how they would like to proceed.

Jessie Hermus-gym teacher presented that PBIS is hosting a Winter Olympics for the elementary that will take place on February 7. She asked for PTO funds for hot chocolate, water and cookies for the event. In addition, PTO purchased glow sticks for use in their closing ceremony. PTO will support the refreshments and will help at the event. If a sign up genius is needed, PTO will create and send out. KHS Key Club is also supporting the event.

Timber Rattlers Reading program will begin in March. Six Flags reading program will begin in February.

Julie Keefe needs more recipes for the 2014 Woodland Cookbook. A committee was formed to finalize details. Committee members are Julie Keefe, Amy Hansen and Heather Benedict. Need to place order by February 28 to receive a discount.

Edana Beck reported on what another PTO is doing which may be options for our PTO. We can participate in the US Cellular voting. Edison School won $25,000. We can look at next year since it ended last fall. Also discussed an incentive for teachers to attend PTO meetings. Each teacher is given $25 for attending. The money must be used for the classroom. Grants for Teachers is a PTO supported program that teachers present a project that he/she would like to do and PTO approves and funds up to $3000. Only give 1 per year per teacher. Lastly, any child that cannot afford a field trip or camp can ask PTO for help. In return, the student must do community service around the school.
