Athletic Philosophy

Everything expected on the court should also be present in every athlete’s life while off the court.

I believe…

Honesty earns respect!!

I will be honest with players at all times.

I will tell them where they stand on the team.

I will answer any questions that players have.

IF YOU ARE NOT HONEST WITH YOUR TEAMMATES, COACHES,

PARENTS, and TEACHERS YOU ARE DOOMED TO FAIL, BECAUSE NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO TRUST YOU.

Attitude is EVERYTHING!!

Come every day with the expectation of something great happening!

Come to practices/games with the attitude to push yourself to become better.

Realize that your ATTITUDE is a CHOICE that you make every day.

If you have an attitude that is detrimental to the team during a

practice/game you will be asked to leave.

Enthusiasm is contagious!!

Practice is what you make of it – for both coaches and players.

We need a team that will not give up.

People who are enthusiastic rarely fail at life.

Responsibility is not an option.

It goes hand in hand with growing up.

Do what you say you are going to do on and off the court.

Coaches want players that they can count on…

players want coaches they can count on.

PRIDE!!

Take pride in yourself.

- Especially when you think no one is watching.

Take pride in your team.

Take pride in your school.

Competitiveness

You must have a competitive drive to play at the VARSITY Level.

Practices are where you perfect skills…

games are where you perform skills!!

Players must work hard in practice: How close to 100% can you give each day?

Players/Coaches must WANT to WORK HARD to improve during practice.

You must be present at practices/games in order to improve.

School is why you are here…

School work comes first.

Coaches expect their athletes to earn the highest grades possible.

Just “getting by” is not good enough… push yourselves off the court also.

As an athlete you are responsible for turning your assignments in ON TIME.

CHAMPIONSHIPS!!

I believe we are all here with an ultimate goal of winning the championship.

Coaches plan practices with that ultimate goal in mind.

Coaches make decisions with the team as the priority.

Players must understand their role as part of the TEAM.

Parents must understand their athlete’s role as part of the TEAM.

For the Love of the Game…

I played because I love the game.

I coach because I love the game.

I want to share my love of the game with every athlete that plays at

New Glarus High School.

The coaches of New Glarus High School Volleyball are here to help every athlete improve as a volleyball player, as well as teach every athlete skills to take into their everyday lives.

How hard are you, as an athlete, going to work to improve and grow??

2015 Program Goals

As a program/team we will take time to set measurable goals… here are some things to consider…

TEAM

1. The value of the team… what you lack during any one day is

picked up by your teammates.

2. Championships are won when no one is looking.

3. Honesty builds trust. Each athlete must trust her teammates

in order for the team to succeed.

4. Winning is always a goal. What are you going to do to make

it happen??

PLAYER

1. Confidence is born because we struggle through it, not

because we are given easy opportunities.

2. Players are not equal, skills are not equal… how you are

treated on the team will be fair.

3. Don’t get mad, get better.

Coaching Expectations

The four golden rules to coaching New Glarus Volleyball…

1. Coaches must be honest with their players.

Honesty earns respect.

Good coaches talk about their expectations – Great coaches have athletes who meet their expectations, because they confront incorrect behavior and half efforts and earn the love and respect of the athletes.

2. Coaches must be fair to their players.

Explain your decisions when necessary.

Good coaches talk about their expectations – Great coaches understand the game and their athletes and how to teach them.

3. Coaches must do what is best for the team.

Individuals must come second.

4. Coaches must be enthusiastic.

Practice is what you make of it.

Enthusiasm is contagious.

Good coaches encourage and motivate – Great coaches motivate through love and get every ounce of attention and energy from their athletes.

Parent Expectations

1. You are part of the team and volleyball program.

We are happy to have your spirit and support at the games.

Please do not approach players during warm-ups/games… we expect them to be focused.

2. Be supportive of every member of the team.

Treat them as if they were your daughters.

Your daughter is no longer an individual, but now a team member.

3. As a parent… trust the coach.

Please come to the games as a Cheerleader… not a COACH.

The New Glarus Volleyball Program has exceptionally qualified coaches.

Do not contact a coach until the day (24 hours) after a competition.

Approaching a coach immediately after a competition is not acceptable,

the coach has the right to walk away.

If you plan a meeting with the coach… your daughter will be present.

4. Be a constant support to your daughter.

Be a positive reinforcement at home.

As a program we will support your daughter in all aspects possible,

we thank you for supporting our program.

5. Agree to Disagree.

As coaches we do not expect you to agree with everything we do.

We DO expect you to agree that we are not just here to produce good volleyball players;

we are here to help guide your daughters to become good people.

Thank you in advance for all of your support throughout the year.

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to get to know and work with your wonderful daughters!!!

New Glarus High School Volleyball 2015

Policies and Expectations

Practices:

1.  Each TEAM is responsible for setting up their net.

-  Varsity – New gym

-  Junior Varsity – New gym

-  Freshmen- New gym

2.  All practices start at 4:00 pm. This should give you enough time to see teachers, change clothes, and set up the nets.

-  The entire program will sprint for every minute we wait after 4:00.

-  The only excuse for being late to practice is seeing a teacher… not at a meeting. (If you are responsible enough to be in the club, see the advisor prior to the meeting and explain that practice starts at 4:00).

-  Practices will end between 6:00 and 6:15 pm.

-  Clothing:

-  Dress comfortably AND appropriately. No tank tops or sports bras without shirts. NO JEWELRY.

-  NO CELL PHONES DURING PRACTICE.

-  If a coach sees you looking at your phone you will be asked to leave practice immediately.

-  If there is a family emergency we will work something out.

3.  Attendance:

DEFINITIONS:

Unexcused absence: missing a practice and not talking to a coach before the practice starts OR not bringing a note. (i.e. doctor’s note)

-  work, tanning, shopping, baby-sitting

-  SENDING A MESSAGE WITH ANOTHER PLAYER!!!

-  CONSEQUENCE – Sits next MATCH

Excused absence: Talking to a coach before practice starts AND bringing a note.

-  CONSEQUENCE – Reduced playing time: coaches discretion.

Tardy: Showing up late and not telling a coach BEFORE hand, OR not bringing a pass/note.

-  CONSEQUENCE – Team runs for each minute late

Excused Tardy: Sending Coach Schmit a text or email that you will be late, and bringing a note when you get to practice.

- just text and let me know that you are staying after with a teacher.

-  CONSEQUENCE – None, but should not become a habit

-  2 Tardies = 1 unexcused Absence.

-  3 unexcused absences and the athlete will be removed from the team.

-  5 Total missed practices will result in being removed from the team.

-  If an athlete must leave practice early… she must tell HER coach before practice.

-  This may be considered an unexcused absence. (i.e. tanning)

-  ATHLETES MUST BE IN SCHOOL ALL DAY IN ORDER TO PRACTICE.

-  A coach will be checking.

-  Appointments excused by a parent are okay… make sure the office knows.

-  PARENT notes DO NOT count for excusing a practice. The missed practice will count as an unexcused practice. (i.e. if you go to the dentist have them write the note!)

4.  Attendance and Games.

-  If an athlete misses a practice the night before a game and it is UNEXCUSED she will sit the next game.

-  If an athlete misses a practice the night before a game and it is EXCUSED her playing time may be reduced.

-  If an athlete misses a game for any reason other than church, family, or a school event in which the athlete is directly involved (i.e. FFA, band, choir), the athlete will sit the next 2 match dates which includes tournaments. This decision is under the coach’s discretion. (Please note: family vacations are not excused misses, the athlete will sit).
