Come explore the tiny world of lichens and mosses with Dr. Erin Martin. Dr. Martin, a ShastaCollege instructor, is an ecologist who will put an environmental emphasis on the topic of lichens and mosses. Don’t miss this opportunity for an early spring walk on the Preserve while learning why these little beauties are so important in our environment. April 15 (Sun.) 9 a.m. – “CLEAR CREEK WILDFLOWERS AND WILD PLANTS”
Walk with plant ecologist Craig Martz and enjoy the beauty of blooming wildflowers, the stimulation of a walk in the country, and the fascination of learning about plants and nature from a knowledgeable expert. Sunday mornings don’t get any better than this. Martz is an ecologist with California Department of Fish & Game and past officer of the Shasta Chapter of California Native Plant Society. NO COST.

April 21 (Sat.) 1 p.m. - “BRIDGE DEDICATION AND PROJECT UPDATES”
Join us to celebrate the dedication of our new footbridge. It’s been some time coming, which is a story in itself. Also get up-to-date information on big plans coming to lower Clear Creek. There has been much excitement surrounding a $1.2 Million California River Parkways grant obtained by the Western Shasta Resource Conservation District with a little help from HCCP, BLM, and other friends of lower Clear Creek. Check out a new re-vegetation project near the creek, designed by Point Reyes Bird Observatory and planted by local school children. This will be fun and informative for the whole family! FREE EVENT

April 28 (Sat.) 10 a.m. - “ACORNS: A NATIVE AMERICAN STAPLE”
Native Wintu Ted Dawson will discuss the acorn, from harvest to food items. You’ll be invited to join in grinding acorns with mortar and pestle and be rewarded with the best acorn soup in ShastaCounty. You’re probably aware that acorns were a staple food of the Native Americans of California, but did you know the acorn oil is a remedy for poison oak? Bring the family. NO COST.

May 12 (Sat.) 8:30 a.m. - “Early Bird Watchers”
Enjoy early morning bird watching with local expert Barbara Peck and members of Wintu Audubon Society. Barbara has a Masters in Wildlife Biology and Ecology. She and Wintu Audubon members will point out birds and fascinate us with information about them. Bring your curiosity and (if possible) binoculars. FREE EVENT.

May 19 (Sat.) 10 a.m. – “Geology” -- National Park Service geologist, Brian
Rasmussen, will take us on an easy two-mile stroll along old roads and trails in
Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve. Brian has a special interest in volcanology as
well as general geology. Enjoy exercise and fresh air while you learn about the rocky history of the local area. Children welcome. NO CHARGE.

June 3 (Sun.) 10 am –“BUGS ON THE BOTTOM – A LOOK AT STREAM
BOTTOM ECOLOGY IN CLEAR CREEK” Wade the stream with ShastaCollege instructor Morgan Hannaford, PhD – or watch from shore – as he gathers strange and fascinating insects from their underwater homes. Dr. Hannaford has a passion for teaching all ages, from kindergartners to retirees, and the topic is intriguing. Don’t miss this family event. Bring sneakers if you want to wade. FREE EVENT.

June 10 (Sun.) 7:30 am -- SPECIAL . . . POINT REYES BIRD OBSERVATORY
Join Point Reyes Bird Observatorybiologists as they mist-net and band songbirds in the Clear Creek watershed. Meet at the HCCP parking lot to follow us to the mist-netting site. Once there, you will accompany the biologists as they check the nets for songbirds and then observe them banding, measuring, weighing, and safely releasing the birds. This is a great opportunity to see these beautiful songbirds up-close and in the hand while interacting with biologists as they work. Children welcome. FREE EVENT !
