YOUNG CARERS SUPPORT WORKER

Job Description:

Area of Work:Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale

Base:East Lancs Voluntary Sector Resource Centre, Burnley

Accountable to:Carers Contact Manager, the Chief Officer and ultimately to the CVS Executive Committee.

Hours:37hours per week – to cover Maternity Leave until 31st March 2013

Salary:Scale 4.18 - £17,161

Job purpose: To support Young Carers and to enable them to participate in groups, activities and events which will enhance their quality of life.

To provide support to families of Young Carers families, using volunteers to provide a befriending service.

Definition of a Young Carer – A Young Carer is a person under 18 years of age who is significantly affected caring for a person with a long term illness or disability including mental health issues and substance misuse.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To assist the Young Carers Development Worker.
  • To organise and facilitate activities and events for Young Carers.
  • To work with individual Young Carers and groups of Young Carers to provide short breaks from caring through activities such as regular group meetings, day trips and residentials.

To offer Young Carers the opportunity to talk about their situation confidentially.

To develop a series of targeted small group sessions aimed at achieving the outcomes of Every Child Matters

To liaise with community, statutory and voluntary organisations in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale to identify Young Carers.

To recruit, train and co-ordinate volunteer involvement in the project for befriending families and assisting on activities.

To keep detailed information on the work and to facilitate the monitoring and evaluation of the Young Carers Project.

To prepare regular reports for the CVS Executive Committee and provide monitoring information for The Henry Smith Charity in accordance with the Service Level Agreement.

Undertake any other duties which may from time to time be required and which are consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the post and to support the overall ethos, principles & practices of the organisation

Work with people from a range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

This post will involve evening and weekend work for which time off in lieu is given.

Holiday entitlement is 23 working days (pro rata) plus 8 statutory days per annum.

There will be a three-month probationary period.

This post is subject to an Enhanced CRB Disclosure Check.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

The ability to:

Listen to, and communicate effectively with, children and young people and their families, both verbally and in writing.

Develop and maintain good working relationships with young people and their families.

Develop and maintain good working relationships with providers of services. E.g. Health, Education and Social Services staff.

Communicate effectively with colleagues and other agencies both verbally and in writing.

Recruit, train and co-ordinate volunteers.

Prepare accurate reports and keep records in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

Organise and collate information for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

Maintain confidentialityand understand and practice equality & diversity.

Work as part of a team and on your own initiative.

Drive and be willing to use own transport for work purposes.

Be willing to work flexibly and regulate hours in accordance with the needs of the work.

Be computer literate.

Desirable

Some knowledge of: Children’s Services, Health Services, Youth and Community Services and Education.

Some knowledge of current legislation relating to Children and Carers.

Hold a current Midas licence.
