Daily Lesson Plan:
Engage / How will you engage the students?
I will engage the students by asking them how often they buy something from a vending machine, drink a can of soda, use a water bottle, etc. I will then ask them what they do with these materials afterwards, save them and reuse them for something else, recycle them, or throw them away?
Explore / AC will:
Ask the kids if they know what recycling is? Ask someone to try and explain it. Briefly touch on recycling and how we have recycling cans in schools and classrooms. Ask the students if they recycle.
Show the students the video on recycling. / Students Will:
Students will participate in the discussion and will watch the video quietly.
Differentiation: If the students have absolutely no idea what recycling is, go show them the recycling bin in the corner and how it is blue. Ask them if they have observed what typically goes into the blue bin. Give them examples of recyclable objects on the board such as cans, milk cartons, cardboard, etc. Then show them the video.
Explain / AC will:
Elaborate on the vocabulary words and then explain the process of recycling. While explaining, the ACs will draw on the board creating a cyle to show where we get our materials from the earth and the two things that can happen once they are used: recycled or put in a land fill.
What is the recycling loop?
Have you ever seen this symbol before? This is the recycling loop. There are other forms of this symbol but this is the most common form.
The three arrows in this symbol stand for the three steps in the recycling process. The first of these steps is the collection of therecyclable materials through curbside or other kinds of collection facilities. The second step is taking the old material and making it into new products. The third step happens when you buy products made from materials taken from products that you would have thrown away.
Why should we recycle?
Recycling or making new things from recycled ones takes a lot less money, much less energy, and saves a lot of the Earth’s natural resources, thereby helping the environment.
Recycling also saves space in landfills. Instead of your garbage being thrown away and taking up space and possibly damaging the environment it’s better to recycle it.
The energy saved by recycling also results in less pollution and we all know how bad pollution is to our environment. When you make new products from old but still useful materials think about the natural resources that are saved because of the material from old products that would otherwise have been thrown away.
How do we recycle?
You begin to recycle when you separate recyclable materials from other your other trash. The segregated materials are collected by different collection programs. / Students will:
Listen and ask questions when they arise. Be respectful to other students if they don’t know what recycling is.
Differentiation: If the students are having trouble understanding why only some materials are recyclable, help them understand that it is only materials that have the potential to be reused. i.e. used tissues vs. a used bottle.
Elaborate / AC will:
Explain that the students will be making earth mobiles based off of what they have learned about recycling.
Each student will get a plate that they will decorate and color as the earth. They will then have a piece of paper that they will cut 3 hearts out of. On the 1st heart they will draw a picture of what it means to recycle, using symbols. On the 2nd heart they will write why it is important to recycle. And on the 3rd heart they will draw pictures of things in their home that they will start recycling rather than throwing away such as toilet paper rolls, water bottles, egg cartons, etc. When done, the students will punch a hole into the top of each heart and three holes at the bottom of their earth. They will then attach the hearts to the earth using yarn. / Students will:
Participate in the activity and make their own mobile. Ask for help when questions arise
Differentiation: If this is too easy for the big kids, they will write a paragraph on the back of the earth explaining the process of using natural resources, and the process of recycling. They can draw a flow chart if that is what they prefer
Evaluate / Discussion Questions - AC will:
Ask the students what they have learned about recycling and have the students share their mobiles
