Astronomical Telescopes
Astronomical telescopes use different wavelengths to observe and study the universe.
The Project
In this project you will work in a group to research one type of astronomical telescope, and present your research to your classmates in the form of a slideshow
The Groups
- Each group will consist of 3 to 4 students and will Choose one of the following wavelengths:
- radio
- microwave
- infrared
- visible light
- ultraviolet
- x-ray
- gamma
- Each student in the group will have a different responsibility in the project
- Student #1 describes what features of the universe can be observed with this wavelength
- Student #2 describes one example of this kind of telescope
- Student #3 describes one example of this kind of telescope
The Research
- Each member of the group will make their own research notes and find their own images for the slideshow
- All research notes will be made using the Research Notes Template
- All images will be cited using the Image Credits Template
- All research will be created and stored in a group folder in Google Drive
- One member of the group needs to do the following:
- Create a folder in google drive with your class and wavelength in the name
- Example: sci8_2-1_infrared
- Share the folder with all of your group members, AND with Ms. J
- Follow these instructions carefully!
- Ms. J has placed a note-taking template in google drive
- Make a copy of the note-taking template
- Rename the template and save it inside your folder
- Use this note-taking template to record the sources of your information
Sources
- Use at least three sources
- Each source must be a credible site, which lists THEIR sources
- You MUST use a database as one of your sources (see instructions in the class notebook)
- Wikipedia may be ONE of your sources
- Websites such as answers.com may NOT be used as a source
- Use a different note-taking template for each source
- Follow a similar procedure with the image-credits template to record the sources of all of your images
The Report
- Create a document to be your report
- Name the document according to the following format:
- Example: sci8_2-1_infrared_report
- Note that this is an example, your report should have your wavelength in its name
- Share the document with all of your group members, AND with Ms. J (be sure to give me editing privileges)
- 1 page maximum
- title font = 18 points
- text font = 12 points
- names of group members, date, class and period on the top right
- use point form and short sentences
- the report should cover the following
- describe the wavelength and what features of the universe it can be used to observe and study
- name and describe at least one example of an astronomical telescope that uses this wavelength to observe and study the universe
- each group member will also individually submit a properly formatted page with an alphabetical works cited list for all notes and images that they used
The Slideshow
- The slideshow must be created using Google slides
- The name of the Slideshow should have the following format:
- sci8_2-1_infrared_presentation (note: this is an example)
- Share this Slideshow with your group members and with Ms. J
- the Slideshow should be based on the report (you should be able to cut and paste from the report to the Slideshow)
- Every page must have at least one image and a minimum font of 32 points – this means you have to use very few words!
- the Slideshow has a minimum of 3 slides:
- first slide = title page
- second slide = how this wavelength is used to study the universe
- third slide = an example of an astronomical telescope that uses this wavelength
The Presentation
- The slideshow is due ______
- The Slideshow will be presented on ______
- Each member of the group will present their own page
- You must memorize your presentation, you will not be allowed to read from notes or from the slideshow
