Debut solo album ‘Show Stopper’ to follow in October
The next chapter in Aston Merrygold’s career comes with the July17th release of his debut single ‘Get Stupid’ which will be followed by his first solo album ‘Show Stopper’ in October. As part of pop phenomenon JLS, Aston enjoyed success with five chart-topping singles, a furtherfiveTop 10 hits and foursmashhitalbums.
Written by Aston with Karen Poole and Sonny J. Mason, ‘Get Stupid’ is an electrifying example of what to expect from the album with celebratory horns, pulsating bass grooves and vibrant rhythms topped by his ultra-charismatic vocal delivery. It’s pure contemporary pop grounded within the finest traditions of Sixties R&B, with the entire song created with live instrumentation that will clearly rise up to a whole new level when Aston takes it to the live arena.
“Get Stupid is a phrase that people are going to hear and at first not really understand it,” explains Aston. “In my thinking get stupid means be free, get loose and when five o’clock hits and people are finishing work, it’s time to get stupid and let your hair down. That’s when a lot of people come alive.”
It’s been 18 months since Aston and his bandmates concluded their rags-to-riches with an emotional departing show at London’sO2Arena, but how he’s back. The roots of his upcoming solo album ‘Show Stopper’ mostly lay in his childhood influences – MichaelJackson, JamesBrown, Usher and JustinTimberlake – but also in his lifelong dream “to make my own type of music and make my own decisions.”
‘Show Stopper’ is an album that feels like a seamless progression for Aston. In addition to ‘Get Stupid’, other highlights include the equally infectious ‘Show Me’ which contrasts the raw, single take vocal that features on the romantic ballad ‘You, Me and The Moon’; the seductive, Prince-style funk of ‘One Night in Paris’; and ‘American Girls’ which effortlessly mashes elements of pop, gospel and dancehall.
Aston’s main creative collaborators on the album were one-man hit machine Edwin “Lil’ Eddie” Serrano (Usher, Jessie J) and TalayRiley (EllieGoulding, IggyAzalea). In addition to ‘Get Stupid’, songwriting duo Karen Poole and Sonny J. Mason also made several vital contributions to the collection, as did his former JLS associate Steve Daly.
Aston will play V Festival in August.
