AST 205 FBO Projects

There will be two projects this semester; each group will complete both projects unless otherwise directed.

Project A

Your task will be to choose an FBO (as a group) to evaluate. The FBO should be one which is easily accessible to at least ½ of the group members as at least ½ of the group will do an on site survey of the FBO reporting back to the class in a presentation format. Your presentation will be focused around the course content and should focus on the items listed below.

The presentations will be given at random during the last two regular weeks of class and will consist of a 15 minute presentation (Powerpoint works nicely) with pictures of the FBO. The presentation format is up to you and should be professional (no jeans, tee-shirts, sandals, and should be well rehearsed). The presentation may be forwarded by me to the FBO evaluated to provide them with some feedback on their operation.

You may choose to have one person do all the presenting so long as the entire project is an equal team effort. You will be graded as a group and as such must self-police yourselves in order to ensure that each member is pulling their own weight. The final product to me should be a copy of the Powerpoint presentation

The focus of your report should include:

FBO locationMarket servedServices Provided

Facilities availableFuture PlansLevel of Customer Satisfaction

Information System UsedBusiness Org.Flight Operations

Maintenance Activity Fuel ServicesExposure to Risk

CompetitionProblem AreasOperating licenses

*Include areas of potential improvement in each of the above areas↑

All FBO projects- all parts- due the day you present. Your presentations will beginMonday March 26, 2007. Two - Three groups will present per day.

You will be graded on creativity/professionalism as well as how well the contents of the presentation relates to the course contents.

Don’t hesitate to approach me with any questions concerning the project.

You will be graded on how adequately you cover the above listed areas- the course content over the next several weeks will guide you in structuring your presentation.

Project B

Accomplish Oneof the following and prepare a 5 – 10 minute presentation to the class:

  1. Read a factual general aviation themed book. This can be from a historical perspective, a history of a particular manufacturer/aircraft model etc, or chronicles of a notable G.A. flight experience (i.e around the world, etc.). Do not choose a book about a compilation of accidents etc. however it can be an in-depth look at a particular accident. Do not choose a textbook or a flight training related book. A how-to book on aircraft purchasing and ownership would work fine.
  • All topics must be pre-approved by Dr. Barnhart and you must sign up in advance. Topics are first-come, first serve- no duplicates will be allowed. Good sources are: sporty’s pilot shop and, of course, amazon.com
  • Presentations will begin Monday, April 9, 2007.
