Assumption To Host Annual Empty Bowls Event
For Cass Community Social Services
Sunday, March 15
For the last 8 years, Assumption Church has hosted Empty Bowls, an event to raise awareness to fight hunger and care for those in need through Cass Community Social Services. Cass, with the vision and direction of Rev. Faith Fowler, has been building a campus, one building at a time. Last year Cass completed the rehabbed Antisdel Apartments for 41 homeless families and individuals. In addition, the mentally challenged, abused mothers and children, veterans, and other groups in need are all being serviced and rehabilitated to re-enter society. The extraordinary frigid weather has increased an awareness of our homeless coping to stay alive and the wonderful people of Cass who are reaching out and caring for them. Visit Cass at
On Sunday, March 15, 4 - 6 p.m., Assumption will host the event at 21800 Marter Rd., located in the communities of St Clair Shores and Grosse Pointe Woods. Area restaurants will once again provide soup and beautiful handmade bowls from Sugar Hill Clay will be provided for each guest. The Ambassadors, a group of previously homeless men from Cass, will sing gospel music. Minimum donation is $10.
In addition to the March 15 event at Assumption Cultural Center, there will be a preview Empty Bowls Benefit event at Sugar Hill Clay studio, 71 Garfield in Midtown, on Friday, March 13, with food, beer and wine. Minimum donation is $25.
Sponsors are ShorePointe Nursing Center, The Grosse Pointe News,
Sugar Hill Clay Studio, Huron Capital and Assumption Cultural Center. Churches, organizations, business and individuals are welcome to become a sponsor.

Celebrities are signing bowls for an on-line auction as well that was initiated in 2013. Last year's Empty Bowls raised over $8,000 to assist the Cass programs. This is hardly enough to cover any single program and food for the homeless. The committee is expanding to include all area churches and organizations to make a difference in the lives of many people. Contact Bonnie Mellos at (313) 410-7177 if you are interested in joining our committee.
