I, ______, hereby declare my candidacy for a position on the Associated Students College of Alameda council.

I understand that:

  • I am a currently enrolled student at the College of Alameda and I must also be enrolled in a minimum of five (5) units EACH SEMESTER in which I will hold office.
  • I must have and will maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA EACH SEMESTER in which I will hold office.
  • Standing for an elected student government position on the ASCOA council is a commitment of service to the student of College of Alameda and that holding this elected position is a privilege granted to me by the students and that it is my duty to fulfill those commitments under my responsibility.
  • Any violation of the College of Alameda student conduct code will result in my candidacy being terminated. (See AP 5500).

Position Description

What is ASCOA?

ASCOA is the College of Alameda’s Student Government, which represents the student population. The purpose of ASCOA is to provide a governing body and forum to address the issues of common concern to the students of College of Alameda and to address them in our shared governance process. The ASCOA participates within the guidelines of the Peralta Community College District governance system.

Eligibility Requirements

The minimum qualifications to run for office are as follows:

  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA to serve.
  • Minimum 5 units at College of Alameda
  • Be on “Academic Good Standing” as determined by the Director of Student Activities.
  • Attend the mandatory ‘Candidate’s Orientation Meeting’

Requirements Once Elected

  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.
  • Maintain minimum enrollment of 5 units at College of Alameda.
  • All ASCOA members will participate in college committees.
  • Hold a minimum of 5 office hours per week at ASCOA office.
  • Attend all meetings, events, trainings and retreats.

Campaigning

  • Campaign ONLY during designated dates and areas around campus.
  • Two or more persons who wish to band together for campaigning purposes or to use a political party must first be registered with the Election Committee.
  • No candidate will interfere, publish/post negative or inaccurate information about any candidate during the election process. Failure to comply with this provision shall result in disqualification.
  • Each candidate shall NOT spend more than $150.00 on campaign activities for the general election. All donated material will be assessed at full retail value and included in the $150.00 limit.
  • Each candidate shall submit an expenditure report which include receipts clearly itemizing and personal funds and donation towards the candidate’s campaign.
  • The Election Committee will review all candidate’s expenditure reports prior to the official certification date (April 25, 2016).

Senator

Represent and serve as the spokesperson for all students from College of Alameda on the ASCOA Board.

Serve as the main body of government for student representation and participate in college and district wide shared governance.

Collect and bring up ideas, concerns or issues from students to the ASCOA Board.

President of the Senate

Serve as the spokesperson to the entire student body in regards to campus policies, student initiatives, fiscal planning and budget allocation.

Enforces and upholds the ASCOA Constitution

Presides over ASCOA Meetings.

Serve as the liaison between the Association and college administration.

Oversee organization and planning of campus events and activities.

Vice President of Operations

Assumes duties in the event of the President’s absence.

Responsible for the management of the Senate which includes calendars, meetings and committees.

Maintain a master copy of all agendas, minutes, board reports and other records and documents.

Vice President of Programs

Facilitate the collaboration between the ASCOA and student clubs on events and activities.

Responsible for the approval and organization of ASCOA and student club events and activities.

Maintain the master calendar for all approved events and activities.

Treasurer of the Senate

Maintain an accurate record of all ASCOA and student clubs funds and expenditures.

Facilitate all funding requests and maintain records of expenditures.

Responsible for generating new ways of income through fundraising.

Secretary of the Senate

Maintain ASCOA communication through documents and email with administration, other campuses and District.

Responsible for taking all minutes, notes and memos for ASCOA.

Write and maintain all ASCOA correspondence, contact lists, and vendors.

Communications Officer

Establish and maintain all marketing and outreach efforts for ASCOA

Responsible for the advertising and outreach for all ASCOA and student Club events and activities.

Responsible for communicating ASCOA news through social media, newsletters, photography, etc.
