3.BACKGROUND

The Community of Chemin Neuf (‘CCN’) is a worldwide Christian community (see Its headquarters are in France where it first began.

CCN has members in the UK who have set up an independent, UK-based charity (‘CCN UK’); see details above.

CCN has a community house in Kinshasa (‘CCN Kinshasa’), the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The community has been there for over ten years; throughout this time they have provided a range of activities and services, including supporting the local Parish, and also providing social services to street children.

LBM (Lisanga Mpo Ya Bokolisi Mboka) is a Congolese NGO working in the field of family reunification and re-integration of Street Children in Kinshasa. It is a secular organisation created by CCN on the advice of Unicef in 2009. This was to provide clear demarcation between the social work activity of LBM with the street children and the pastoral and religious work of the Community. LBM has an overall annual turnover of approximately £275,000; with this LBM operates various facilities and services:

  • an ‘open’ Centre for young boys
  • a ‘closed’ Centre for young girls
  • an ‘open’ training Centre for older street youth
  • a training college (named CFP) for manual skills training
  • street-based social work outreach to street-connected children and youth

LBM employs approximately 40 staff, most of them having already had some social care training. Almost all of the staff are Congolese and live in Kinshasa. For further details, please see:

To support LBM’s work with street children, CCN UK secured £100,000 per year for three years from Comic Relief from 2013/14 – 2015/16. (Comic Relief is LBM’s largest donor.)

Earlier this year we secured a further three years 'follow on' funding from Comic Relief for the same amount.

This new period of funding also marks the development of a new five year strategic plan for the project which will include a fundamental focus and integration of child rights and also a dissemination amongst other NGOs of LBM's effective methodology leading to sustainable change in the lives of these children . Amongst numerous other developments it is proposed that CCN UK engage a part-time assistant to their UK project manager for the next 2.5 years.

This post is being offered on a self-employed basis.
