ASSIGNMENTS: Marking Assignments Offline

In this video, you will learn how to:

1.  download all assignments

2.  give feedback, comments and marks

3.  upload all marked assignments

If there are a lot of submissions to mark, you might like to consider marking them offline. This is done by downloading all the submissions as a single ZIP file, marking them offline and then uploading an updated ZIP file back into WebLearn.

We recommend that you use Internet Explorer for uploading the ZIP file, since an error message may appear if you use Firefox.

When you download the assignment folder and associated files, you need to maintain the original structure of files and folders. This is because after marking the assignment, you will bundle the files and folders back into a single file and if any of the structure has changed, the Assignments tool will not be able to interpret it correctly.

We will start from the top level of the Assignments tool. To access this page, click on the Assignments link on the tools menu.

If the Assignments tool is not currently visible on your tools menu, you need to use the Site Info tool to add it. Please refer to related videos for details.

1.  download all assignments

Under the title of the assignment you wish to mark, click Mark.

This takes you to the Submissions List showing the list of students and the status of their submissions for this assignment.

Click Download All.

Save the file bulk_download.zip to your computer.

We recommend that you save the zip file in a particular folder named with the date, because every time you download the bulk file it will overwrite the previous version.

Click Open.

Click Save.

Click Open to enter the saved .zip file.

Click Extract all files.

Click Next.

Click Finish.

You should now see a folder with the same name as the title of the assignment.

Double click on the assignment folder.

It contains individual folders for each student who submitted the assignment.

2.  give feedback, comments and marks

Double click on one particular student folder.

Double click the folder called Submission Attachment(s) which contains the file/s that were originally submitted by the student.

You can open the student document to read or print it.

Go up one level to see the contents of the student folder.

Double click the folder called Feedback Attachment(s).

This folder is currently empty.

You can use this to return versions of the document that you have written notes on electronically and/or any other documents you would like to the student to receive.

Go up one level to see the contents of the student folder.

Open the text file comments.txt.

Type your feedback comments to the student.

Click File.

Save this comments file with the same name.

Close the text file.

Go up one level to see the contents of the assignment folder.

Open the spreadsheet file called grades.csv.

In the grade column, enter the points or letter grade that you wish to award to each student.

Click File.

Click Exit.

Click Yes to save the file.

Remember to keep the original name of the file.

Click Yes.

When you have finished marking the assignments, go up one level to see the top of the assignment folder.

Note that you need to zip this assignment folder instead of the bulk folder that you downloaded from WebLearn.

Right click on this folder.

In the sub-menu, select Send To.

Select Compressed (zipped) Folder.

The marked assignments are compressed into a folder that maintains the structure that the Assignment tool expects.

3.  upload all marked assignments

Go back to WebLearn and the same Submission List from where you downloaded all the submissions for this assignment.

Click on Upload All.

You can choose which elements you wish to upload.

Select All.

Click Browse.

Please note that you need to upload the zip file named with the assignment title and not this original bulk file.

Double click the file bulk_download folder which contains all the edited assignment files.

Select the zip file that you have previously created.

Click Open.

Scroll down.

Click Upload.

In the Submissions List, you can now see that the status of the student submission is Marked and the mark appears in the Mark column.

Click on the student’s name.

The comments you entered in the comments.txt file appear in the Tutor Comments box.

Scroll down.

The document that you put into the Feedback Attachment(s) folder appears here.

The mark you entered for this student in the spreadsheet appears here.

If you are ready to return the mark, comment and feedback to the student, click on Return Assignment to Student.
