Assignment Brief 12.3

Qualification / BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (Applied Biology)
Unit number and title / Unit 12:Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction
Start date / 04/01/2016
Deadline / 12/02/2016
Assessor name / Ms Fensome
Assignment title / Endocrine system and homeostasis
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the homeostatic mechanisms used by the body to maintain the internal environment.
Scenario
You are working as a research worker and have been asked to produce a report onthe homeostatic mechanisms used by the body to maintain the internal environment as part of an application for a research grant.
Task 1 / P4: Outline the organisation and function of the endocrine system
Following the lesson on the endocrine system you must complete the worksheet on the structure and function of the endocrine system. You must demonstrate an awareness of the how the endocrine system acts to maintain a homeostatic environment. You will demonstrate that you understand the organisation of the endocrine system and how different hormones and glands function. You must make sure that you have labelled all of the glands and the hormones that they produce.
Due date: This provides evidence for P4
Task 2 / P5: Describe the mechanism of the homeostatic system
M4: Explain positive and negative feedback in homeostasis, using examples from the human body.
Make a poster on the mechanism of homeostasis. Your poster should include the following.
  • What homeostasis is
  • Why homeostasis is important
  • What factors within the body are under homeostatic control
  • What a negative feedback mechanism is
  • One example from the body which is under control of a negative feedback mechanism
  • What a positive feedback mechanism is
  • One example from the body which is under control of a positive feedback mechanism.

Due date: This provides evidence for P5 & M4
Task 3 / M3: Explain the functions of the endocrine system
Prepare a powerpoint presentation on three glands within the body. Your powerpoint should include the following.
  • Where the gland is located.
  • What hormones are secreted by the gland
  • How the gland and the hormones interact to control a body system.

Due date: This provides evidence for M3
Task 4 / D2 Explain the interrelationship between the nervous and endocrine systems
Write an essay titled the coordination system. Your essay needs to cover the following areas.
A clear description of the organisation of the endocrine and nervous systems.
An explanation of the differences between the two systems.
Explain how the sympathetic and the parasympathetic are different and their roles in ensuring a homeostatic state is maintained.
Explain the interrelationship between the nervous system and the endocrine system in a given situation, for example the digestion of food.
Remember to reference any sources used.
Due date: This provides evidence for D2
Task 5 / D3 Explain how malfunctions of the homeostatic mechanisms can lead to disorders.
Research malfunctions of the homeostatic processes. Write a report explaining the effects of malfunctioning of the following.
  • Control of blood glucose levels. Explain what happens why people are unable to control their blood glucose levels, the disease and what effect it has on the body.
  • Control of body temperature. Explain what causes hyper and hypothermia, what effect it has on the body and how it can be treated.
  • Control of water levels. Research diseases associated with control of water level. What effect does malfunctioning water level control have on the body? How could it be rectified?
Remember to reference any sources used.
Due date: This provides evidence for D3
