Assignment 11.4 Brief
Qualification / BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (Applied Biology)Unit number and title / Unit 11:Physiology of human body systems
Start date / 06/01/2014
Deadline / 31/01/2014
Assessor name / Mrs Early
Assignment title / The digestive system
The purpose of this assignment is to relate the structure of the digestive system to its function.
Scenario
You are a forensic laboratory technician investigating the nutritional content of foods. As part of your role you need to be able to identify unknown samples that enter the laboratory in order to determine the composition of samples. You need to be able to demonstrate how tests are carried out and relate them to where these digestive processes would occur in the human body.
Task 1 / P5: Use appropriate chemical tests to identify different dietary nutrients
Initially carry out a risk assessment for the following experiment. Then carry out a series of tests on different food groups to help you identify a mystery food group. Record your results in a suitable form and analyse your results fully.
Due date: This provides evidence for P5
Task 2 / P6: Explain how these dietary nutrients are processed through the digestive system
You are a patient information officer for the gastrointestinal department of a hospital. You must produce a poster showing the structure of the digestive tract and indicate, by annotations, where digestion of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins takes place. In each case show the enzymes that are produced and explain their action. Show clearly the products of digestion. Ensure you add to your poster explanations of the role of the liver and pancreas in processing digested nutrients. Ensure you explain how products of digestion become assimilated into body tissue.
Due date: This provides evidence for P6
Task 3 / M4: Use chemical equations to show how the main food groups are dealt with in the digestive system
Using chemical equations show how food is broken down by enzymes and what the resulting products of digestion are.
Due date: This provides evidence for M4
Task 4 / D2: Explain how the digestive, cardiovascular and respiratory systems are interrelated
You are journalist writing an article for a health magazine. In your article you need to explain to people how the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems interrelate. You need to illustrate you article with diagrams. When carrying out this task you need to consider how the digestive system breaks down our food, explaining that they need to be this small in order to pass across the gut wall. Explain the role blood plays in the transport of nutrients and the role of ATP. The respiratory system is also linked and you need to explain why, and its role, linking the role of the blood vessels and the heart.
Due date: This provides evidence for D2
