Assigned Saint for report ______

______

Dear Parents,

As is the tradition here at Aquinas, the second graders will present saint reports Wednesday, November 1st. The chief goal of this project is for the children to become friends with a saint in Heaven.

This project will involve:

1.  Praying to a particular saint to better know him/her and to ask his/her help in getting to be better friends with Jesus.

2.  Researching the life of this particular saint.

3.  Writing and memorizing a short script of this saint, which the student will recite on All Saints’ Day.

4.  Making a poster that tells about the saint.

5.  Dressing up as the saint on All Saints’ Day.

Here are the details for the project:

DUE DATES:

Part 1: Due Thursday, October 5th:

Write a prayer to say to your saint each day. Start praying it right away and turn in a copy to Sister Mary Seton by this date.

Part 2: Due Monday, October 23rd:

Write a paragraph to tell about the life of your saint. This will be the script that you will memorize and recite at school on All Saints Day. See the attached page for details about what to include. When you turn this in, be sure to keep a copy for yourself so that you will be able to practice reciting it.

Part 4: Due Monday, October 30th:

Make a poster to tell about your saint. See the attached page for a rubric to follow.

Part 5: Due Wednesday, November 1st:

Have your saint costume ready to wear to school. This costume does not need to be elaborate. In fact, simple costumes often work best. Plan to wear your costume all day, though you may want to wear your uniform underneath it. You may also bring in a prop that will help you to better explain your saint.

Step 1: Learn about Your Saint

Sister has loaned you a book to read about your saint, but she doesn’t expect you to read this on your own. Ask your mother or father to read it to you or with you. Start each reading session with this prayer:

“Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. Saint ______[the one who is getting to be your good friend], pray for us!”

Pray to this saint throughout the days and weeks ahead and ask him (or her) to help you to become good friends with him (her), to help you accomplish this project in a way that is pleasing to God, and, especially, to help you to become better friends with Jesus.

Step 2: Write a prayer to say to your saint each day. Use the attached paper to write it on. Make two copies: one to keep and pray at home and one to give to Sister Mary Seton.

Step 3: Write a paragraph about your saint.

·  You may ask your parents to help you with the writing.

·  Write it on loose-leaf paper, skipping lines as you go.

Hello! I am St. John of Gorcum. I was born in the 1500’s, and I am a Dominican priest. I lived chiefly in Germany and the Netherlands. I was faithful to the truths of the faith, even when many people were not. When I heard that Catholic priests in a neighboring town were being imprisoned and executed for their faith, I disguised myself to bring the Eucharist and compassion to them. Eventually I, too, was caught. Since I refused to deny the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist or the authority of the Pope, I won the crown of martyrdom in 1572. My feast day is July 9, and I am a patron saint of the Dominican friars.
