CAST/SNS Approval: Yes/No Yes

Please briefly state the program’s goals and objectives:

The fellowship offered is a one year clinical and research fellowship in functional neurosurgery. The primary faculty attending for the fellowship is Dr. William S. Anderson, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery. Dr. Shenandoah Robinson serves as faculty as a member of the Pediatric Neurosurgery team. Dr. Michael Lim serves as faculty for radiosurgery applications. The fellow will participate in all of the functional neurosurgery cases at Johns Hopkins, including procedures to treat movement disorders, epilepsy, spasticity, and chronic pain, as well as cases associated with active research protocols. Additionally, the fellow will be required to participate in research related to functional neurosurgery, either in the laboratories of Dr. Anderson, Robinson, or Lim, or affiliated laboratories in the Departments of Neuroscience or Biomedical Engineering. We require the fellow to complete at least one manuscript for publication during the fellowship period on either a clinical or research topic. The fellow is also expected to participate in and present at the national neurosurgical meetings. There are two multidisciplinary clinical case conferences that the fellow will attend, the weekly Epilepsy Surgery Conference, and the bimonthly Movement Disorder Surgery Conference. These conferences and treatment committees are staffed by neurologists and neuropsychologists along with Drs. Anderson and Robinson, and the associated faculty will additionally be involved in the fellow's training. The fellow will attend Dr. Anderson's weekly clinic and participate in examination and workup of preoperative patients, and postoperative care. Participation with radiosurgery cases will be coordinated with Dr. Michael Lim, and will emphasize but not be limited to functional neurosurgery applications.

The fellow will assist with a monthly functional neurosurgery teaching conference for the neurosurgery residents. Training for the fellow will occur primarily at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, with a few cases occurring at the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus. At all times intraoperatively, the fellow will be supervised by the associated faculty. There will be no other non-fellowship related patient care.

Through the course of this fellowship program, fellows will be exposed to neurosurgical procedures and patient management conferences that deal with the following topics:
