Assessment of the Leadership Curriculum

Essential Resources

In order to successfully submit your work for assessment, you need to be familiar with two resources:

·  The website of the assessment provider, EMLC: www.emlc.co.uk (this is the website to use for anything to do with assessment, and the Leadership CoLab site on Moodle is the site to use for anything to do with your learning).

·  The assessment guidance for Participants and Sponsors: the most up-to-date version will always be on the EMLC website under the Download Documents button – look for the task guidance documents.

Key Documents

The key documents that you should be familiar with are:

·  The guidance for participants and sponsors

·  The competency grid

·  The pro-forma document that you need to complete for your final assessment. It is important that you write to the bullet points in the competency grid for each of the levels and for each competency

The assessor has to ensure that there is evidence for each bullet point, at each level for each competency for you to pass.

The sponsor is crucial in verifying your work, so it is imperative that the sponsor / LDA has a copy of the handbook to understand the programme and the assessment process, along with their role in it. Please download and email it to them.

Submission of Paperwork

1.  You will be sent an email by EMLC 5 weeks before the submission date, asking you to confirm that you still wish to proceed with submission.

2.  You must click the link to confirm by the deadline, and if you do not, then you will automatically be moved to the next assessment window. Any queries on this must be directed to EMLC.

3.  If you want to change your submission date after confirmation, EMLC may impose a cancellation fee. If you have a valid reason for not completing (sickness of self or close family, bereavement, or another exceptional reason) please request a deferral by emailing Maria Delcuratolo at

  1. If you confirm your place and subsequently do not submit the correct paperwork, or if it is incomplete, or if it not uploaded at all to the EMLC website by the deadline, you may be charged a £75 cancellation fee for non-submission.

5.  Paperwork must be submitted via the EMLC website (www.emlc.co.uk) by the deadline given to you and paperwork submitted via email is not accepted.

  1. You must complete all the fields on the EMLC site when uploading - if not your paperwork will not be sent for assessment.

Guidance from EMLC on completing paperwork for submission

Completing incorrect paperwork:

We have had quite a few participants who have uploaded the wrong paperwork for their cohort. Some NPQSL participants are using the task 2 (figure 6) proforma instead of the combined task proforma.

Please be advised:

NPQSL Cohort 1 - complete old paperwork for Task 1 Closing the Gap AND Task 2 the school improvement task

NPQSL Cohort 2 - have the choice EITHER – Task 1 Closing the Gap AND Task 2 the school improvement task OR the combined task.

NPQSL Cohort 3 and onwards - complete the new combined task paperwork (unless they started before February 2014, in which case they have the same choice as intake 2)

NPQML Cohort 1 and 2 – complete paperwork entitled Starting before February 2014

NPQML Cohort 3 and onwards – complete paperwork entitled Starting February 2014

If a participant has deferred, this does not mean that they have changed cohorts unless agreed with the National College. They must still use the paperwork appropriate to their original cohort.

Screen shots:

Participants are using screenshots to include numerous pages onto one sheet. The guidelines clearly state that their supporting documents must not be smaller than font size 11 (this does not mean the original copy can be font size 11 and the screen shot reduced). Many of these screenshots are too small to read so will not be taken into account by the assessor.

Action plan or report to SLT (new ML and SL Combined):

The new NPQML and the NPQSL combined task requires an action plan and report to SLT which is included within the page limits. A lot of participants claim that they were not aware they needed either of these as part of their submission.

Grey boxes:

We are still having trouble with participants and sponsors writing in the grey boxes on the proformas. If we receive these, we have to send them back.

Signatures:

This does not mean a typed name with the font changed. It must be electronically signed or printed, signed and scanned.

Number of documents:

We have advised participants when uploading that they cannot upload more than 4 documents. This is being interpreted, by some, as they have to upload 4 documents.

The reason we have given the limit of 4, is because NPQH and NPQSL have two tasks, so this allows two documents per task. Those completing the combined task for NPQSL and NPQML, would be advised to submit one whole document or two at the most (sponsor form and supporting documents).

Incorrect labelling:

When participants confirm their assessment, we email to advise them how their paperwork should be labelled. The majority of participants do not follow these guidelines. We receive a high amount of paperwork that is submitted without even a name to identify their work. We then have to re-label each document in order that the assessor accesses the correct work for the individual – some do not appear to appreciate the number of participants entering work for assessment. If it is not clearly labelled they run the risk of their work not reaching assessment.

When they upload their work it must be labelled as follows – first name, surname, task.

This naming format should be followed for all programmes and tasks and should be on all the documents uploaded. For example:

·  John Brown NPQSL Combined task

·  John Brown NPQSL Combined task Appendices

·  John Brown NPQML

·  John Brown NPQML Appendices

Gradings:

We have had an increasing number of sponsors who have graded their sponsor comments using numbers. These will be sent back. They are advised to use, moderate, good, very good etc. It does state this on the proformas.

Emailing in work:

We will not accept emailed paperwork. All participants are advised to upload to the website and given instructions on how to do so. The most common problems are that their firewalls at school will not allow them to upload. We strongly advise that individuals submit before the deadline (at home, if they are experiencing problems.)

Other reasons may be that the files are too big, the work has symbols within the title or they are using a smart phone or tablet. The uploading of work is the participant’s responsibility; we are not an IT support centre. Unless it is a problem with our website, we cannot help them. They must make sure they are following the instructions we send them, carefully.

Uploading paperwork:

As soon as the participant confirms their place, they can upload their paperwork. We strongly advise that participants do not wait until the deadline day to upload in case they encounter any problems. They need to check that they can log in and upload documents in advance.

Excel sheets:

Excel sheets should be avoided. We will use a print screen view and count the number of pages. Tabs are not classed as one page.

Word version of guidance:

A lot of participants have completed the proforma within the guidance document and are submitting the whole guidance document. For final assessment documents, please direct participants to the EMLC website. We have the most up to date versions of proforma and guidance.

Page limits: Please make sure that individuals are aware that the page limits include all work, including appendices. Extra pages will not be assessed.
