Assessment and Self Assessment Guidance

This is your self-assessment booklet for the whole year you should complete each section at the end of each stage (exploratory, pathway, and confirmatory) and prior to your assessment. Self assessment will inform the assessment process and the assessor will ask to see your self assessment record.

The exploratory stage is units 1-3, pathway is 4-7 and confirmatory stage is 8 and 9.

You should keep this booklet safe and it must be available at all assessment times.

You must complete the self assessment form carefully and thoughtfully as it forms part of the assessment process.

You will be required to present all the work completed for each stage at the assessment point. You should refer to each project brief for the work required for each assessment and ensure that this work is organised in a clear logical manner prior to assessment. Always consult your tutor or the course leader for any clarification you require about assessment. Make sure you read all notices and information given such as newsletters carefully as they may contain specific information about assessment. You should also consult your handbook for information about specific unit requirements.

Assessment procedures are slightly different for each stage but you will usually be assessed by one or two members of staff and you will be allowed some time to present your work, which forms part of the assessment process. Normally you will be allotted 45 mins to one hour for this process.

There are no formative grades in the exploratory stage of the course other than Pass and Referral. A formative grade will be given in the Pathway stage (Pass, Merit or Distinction), which will inform your projected grade for units 8 and 9. The course team will decide proposed grades for units 8 and 9 prior to external examination. Final grades will be awarded after external examination and institute exam boards.

If you are referred this will be marked on the assessment sheet and clear actions for redemption of referral work should be recorded. You will be informed at the time of the assessment that you have been referred and the assessor will go through the work that you will need to complete in order to redeem the referral. The referral will be confirmed in writing after the subsequent exam board. The deadline for referral work will be written on the assessment sheet and will also be confirmed in writing. You must complete the work by the stated deadline or you will not be allowed to progress on to the next stage of the course.

Students who fail to present work for assessment, including formative assessment, may be disallowed progression to the next stage of the course or withdrawn from the course.

Requests for deferred assessment must be in writing to the course leader using the mitigation claim form available from the course leader.
