REGIONAL DIRECTOR’S CORNER
At the June Officers training session, I had indicated that one of my goals is to help each Section advance their members to the grades of Senior or Fellow. As of the March 31, 2002, Region 9 had a total membership of 6405 individuals. Of that number only 325 (5.1%) are Seniors and only 22 (0.3%) are Fellows. Several Sections have no Fellows while every Section has at least one Senior.
Region 9 needs to promote membership upgrading. This is not easy since we hear from our members the following questions when they are asked to upgrade to Senior status:
- Why should I upgrade to a Senior Member?
- What's in it for me?
These are fair questions, since dues for a Senior member can be higher than for a Regular member and the additional benefits are not outstanding.
To me, the major reasons for an individual to upgrade to the grade of Senior are:
- recognition of accomplishments
- honor and respect within the quality field
- self satisfaction of professional growth
- potential career advancement within your profession
- to qualify for consideration for Fellow status
To be considered for the grade of Senior one must demonstrate growth and accomplishment in the quality profession or the allied arts and sciences. Any member who serves or has served as an officer, a committee chairperson, an instructor or a leader has demonstrated growth and accomplishment and therefore should give consideration to advancing to Senior Member. The grade signifies that the individual has devoted a good portion of their time to the local Section, a Division and/or the Society, so why not claim some glory. You have already earned credibility among your peers.
In addition, National ASQ provides these benefits:
- A Senior member certificate and card.
- Recognition in Quality Advocate.
- Special Senior member name badge at National ASQ.
- Your choice of one extra benefit journal or two Division memberships or an additional section membership.
If an individual chooses to waive the additional benefits, the dues to be a Senior member remains at the regular member rate ($82.00) otherwise the dues for a Senior member increase to $99.00. The application can be found at:
Hopefully, my thoughts and comments will be of help to the Section examining committees as they try to get members to consider upgrading to Senior status. One last thought, if an individual has any aspirations of being a Fellow, keep in mind you need to be a Senior member for at least five years. / WHAT’S NEW
