TAL (TrueAsianLeaders) isagroupyouthmentorshipprogram, dedicatedtoserveandempowerhighschoolstudentsinthebayareaintheOaklandandRichmondcommunities. TALwasdevelopedin 1996 asaresponsetothegangrelatedviolenceinthetwocities. TALisnowattheir 6thgenerationandhasdramaticallyevolvedastheprogramnowincludesacademicsinallitsendeavors.
TALstrivestosupporthighschoolstudentsbybringingthemtotheUCBerkeleycampuseverySundaytoworkwithmentorsandengageinworkshopsthatpromotehighereducation, criticalthinking, andpoliticalawarenessintheAPIcommunity. Asmentorsnurturestudentsintomorecriticalthinkers, theyhopetodevelopstrongyoungleaderswithintheirvariouscommunities.
AsaTALintern, youwillbeworkingcloselywiththeTALcoordinatorsthroughouttheentireyear. Youwillhavetheopportunitytobuildleadershipskillsandgainfirst-handexperienceonwhatittakestomanageamentorshipprogram. Rememberthatasaninternyouwillalsobeamentor. WeNEVERjustteach, preach, andleave. Wewouldliketothinkofthisasalifementorshipprogram, wherethementorshipextendsfarbeyondTAL. Ontopofthat, budgetingisalsocrucialwithregardstoplanningtripsandreimbursementsforgas, food, etc. ThispositionwillworktoensurethatthestudentsaresuccessfullytransportedtocampuseveryTALSundayviadriversorrentalcars. Thispositionwillalsohelpplantransportationfortheannualretreatsandanyotherfieldtripsorsitevisitsthatrequiretransportation.

Whatdoesthatmean? WeknowthatweasBerkeleystudentshaveanoverwhelmingplethoraofthingstodo, butitisveryimportanttofindabalanceinourlives. Thefollow-upincludesfurtherobtaininganddisaggregatingthedatawithadditionaleffortstogatherretainmentratesandgraduationratesofthoseunderCMI. Wewillworkcloselywithotherorgs/rrcs/campusestobuildacoalition.
CalSERVE – Wewillbeworkingwiththisprogressivecoalitiontohelpourorganizationandotherpartnerstudentofcolororganizationsgetstudentrepresentationinstudentgovernment.
California’sProp 30 (November 2012 Ballot) – Wewillbeadvocatingthissalesandincometaxincreasepropositionbyraisingawarenessthrougheducatingandadvocating.

OneofthegoalsofREACH! istopromotehighereducationtounderrepresented, underprivileged, andunder-resourcedstudents. AsaninternfortheOutREACH! program, you’llplanandparticipateinoutreachesthroughoutthesemestertolocalhighschoolsandcommunitycolleges. You’lllearntocontactschoolsandspeaktostudentsabouttherequirementstheymustfulfilltobeeligibleforcollege. Asyoureceivetrainingandsupportinlearningabouttheserequirements, gainteachingtechniquestoengagestudents, you’llalsobecomeknowledgeableonthehistoricalandpoliticalcontextthataffectsourwork.
Thetransferportionofoutreachincludesgivingresourcesandinformationtocommunitycollegestudentsabouttransferringfromacommunitycollegetoafouryearuniversity. Inthefallsemester, wewillfocusonournewlyestablished 4-dayoutreachtriptolocalBayAreahighschools/communitycollegesduringthemonthofOctober/November. InadditiontoourBayAreaOutreach, wewillhostanannual 4-dayoutreachtriptoCentralCaliforniahighschools/communitycollegesduringthelastweekofwinterbreak. Thefollowingspring, we’llconcentrateonourannual 4-dayoutreachtriptoSouthernCaliforniahighschools/communitycolleges. Aswetravelaround, you’llexperiencefirsthandthediversityofstudentpopulations, teachingstyles, classroomenvironments, andschoolsurroundingsinCalifornia. Shadowisamentorshipprogramwhosepurposeistoinspireunderprivileged, low-income, andnon-collegeboundhighschoolstudentsintounderstandingthathighereducationisaccessible, important, andARIGHT. Shadowattemptstohelpstudentsunderstandthathighereducationisaformofempowermenttochallengetheircurrenteconomicstatusandthesocialinjusticetheycurrentlyfacewithintheirrespectivecommunities. Throughmentorship, inspirational, academic, teambuilding, andpoliticalawarenessworkshopsandactivitiescoordinatedbycollegestudentswhohaveanunderstandingandpassionforprogressivesocialchange, Shadowprovidesthetoolshighschoolstudentsneedtocriticallyevaluatetheirlifeexperiencessothattheycanbeempoweredtopursuehighereducation. ○CAPAW, APIICconferenceswhichwillgiveinternstheopportunitytolearnaboutissuesinourcommunity.
○Campusorganizing: Eachprogramwillbespearheadinganissueonourcampusthateffectsourcommunityoncampusaswellasoffofcampus.
CommitteesforGeneralMembers
REACH! Committeesaredesignedforthosewhostillwanttogetinvolvedinreach, learnmoreaboutissuesfacingourcommunities, andbuildprofessionalskillswithouthavingtocommitalargeamountoftime. ThecommitteewillfocusonlearningaboutwhatREACH! hastooffer, thenusetheknowledgetopromoteREACH! byusingsocialmedia, presentations, andotherformsofcommunication. TherearenorequirementstojointheREACH! committee, howeverwedorecommendthatmembersapplyforinternshipprogramsbeforeconsideringthecommitteeasthosearemoreofanenrichingexperience.
