ASHFIELD COMMUNITY SAFETY PARTNERSHIP
NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE’S PROJECT
A project set up in Ashfield six years ago with the aim of encouraging young people to consider and deliver messages about crime and anti-social behaviour has today (Wednesday, March 11th) been named as runner-up in the National Crimebeat Awards.
Staff and students from two of the Ashfield and Mansfield schools involved in Dragons’ Den-style project 6 (DD6) attended the awards ceremony in London where they were presented with medals, certificates and a cheque for £750.
The awards recognise the most innovative and successful crime-prevention projects involving young people, and in congratulating the finalists the High Sheriff of Greater London Kevin McGrath said: “I am greatly inspired and uplifted by the work you are all doing, you are role models within your community.”
Each year for DD the planning group selects a theme and a decision is made about what the students will be asked to do in connection with it.
This year the project is focussing on alcohol misuse, with Year 10 students invited to develop an awareness-raising campaign promoting healthy lifestyles and challenging the social acceptability of alcohol.
Following announcement of the Crimebeat winners the guests were treated to lunch and then the young people were taken on a bus tour of the capital and for a flight on the London Eye as part of their reward.
In addition to the school representatives, Nottinghamshire County Council Community Safety Officer Leah Sareen who chairs the DD planning group and Ashfield District Schools and Early Interventions Police Officer Steve Knighton attended the London presentation.
Commenting on the day, Leah said: “We are absolutely delighted. The young people from Sutton Community Academy and Quarrydale Academy who provided a ten-minute presentation about the project at the ceremony did a great job, as do all of the schools, their staff and pupils involved in the project.
“Ashfield should be very proud of this achievement; it has showcased excellent work being done in the district to people from all over England and Wales.”
