“Enhancing Students Significant Role towards ASEAN Community”

Background and Program Information

Approaching the implementation of ASEAN Community 2015, the regional development process towards the achievement of the region's goals which is to establish a peaceful, welfare and non-discriminatory region, still finds difficulties and leaves so many tasks to be done. In order to achieve those goals, an alignment of regional actors and layers in the society is needed.

By this far, the integration process of the region is still dominated by the governments of ASEAN member countries rather than the society itself. The lack of involvement by ASEAN society makes the regionalism process looked like only the matter of elite groups. This, can be seen in the lack of awareness and knowledge about ASEAN of the society. Therefore, Student Union of Gadjah Mada University organize the ASEAN International Youth Leader Assembly. This conference aims to promote knowledge exchange and mutual understanding amongst university student in ASEAN. Undoubtedly student play major role in driving social condition in Southeast Asia. Historically socio political transformation of the Southeast Asian states drives by the student. Student is crucial actor since the ability and academic capacity to engage in the system. Conference substance encompasses every essential aspect of ASEAN integration in three pillars of the Community. Material will be given to generate knowledge understanding which can trigger fundamental principle of student activism in regional level.

In the end of the conference, we hope that participant would be able to identify the role of student in regional level and problem identification. ASEAN Student have to clarify its role and its capacity and how to engage actively in regional level. Therefore it requires common principle and mutual understanding among the student. Further, problem identification is essential to maximize the potential role of student. Knowledge ability is indispensable for its agenda and way forward.
