Tutoring Techniques

This web site has little of everything a tutor needs or wants to know (how to explain things so the tutee understands, how to gauge whether or not the tutee understands, how to use silence/patience to the advantage of the tutee, etc.). This is a good site for tutoring information.

Being an Effective Tutor

This is a pdf file (a powerpoint slide show) which explains all there is to know about being a good tutor. A lot of helpful information and, if the need arises, a good powerpoint presentation to show to new tutors.

Literacy Connections

Though, this site isn't specifically a peer-tutoring site, the information it has might to helpful to some tutors, to some people who are becoming teachers, or to anyone interested in instructing people (education-wise). This site offers a lot of ideas for teaching/instructing and a lot of information for overcoming various challenges along the way.

Five Steps to Being an Effective Tutor

There isn't a lot of information on this site, but what it has is very helpful. This site gives a quick, bulleted example of what a tutoring session should be like. A good site for tutors who want a simple example of a tutoring session and not book to read about it.

Tutoring Cycle Self-Assessment

The information on this site is similar to the twelve-step process we went over in class (this one is twelve steps too). The difference I kind of liked was the simple examples they gave for some of the steps and the fact that the information/steps are like a little check-list (oh, done with that step: check).

Tutoring FAQ

This site gives an overview of what a tutoring session is like, how long the sessions are, basic questions, etc. This site also has some good links to some writing resources (which could help if you need a quick reference or something).

Training for Tough Tutorials

I really, really liked this site. Not only are there flowcharts for tutorial sessions (for types of students, nonetheless) there are accompanying videos to watch. A very good site if you want to watch how a tutorial is done instead of simply read it.

A Manual for WritingCenter Tutors

I really liked the layout of this web site; it just seems to go well with the writing theme. Aside from the cool layout, though, this site offers a lot of student-scenarios and help for each of those.

Information about Peer Tutoring

Though the layout of this site isn’t very appealing, the information it has is pretty useful. The information walks you through a general tutorial and what to do and how to do it well.

Tutoring Strategies

This site is really a pdf tutoring/independent learning manual. Though the manual is rather lengthy (15 pages), it has an interesting format, good information, and can be printed and taken with you if you want it handy.
