As a Summer Casual Intern you will have an opportunity to learn and develop job skills through participation in a paid internship with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Summer Casual Intern
  • This is a non-career, temporary position.
  • Works under the direct supervision of a Trades Supervisor or Trades worker, as designated.
  • Serves in the Engineering and Maintenance Department at either Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) or Washington Dulles International Airport.

Work assignments typically include learning while performing a range of activities and operations of the unit/team of assignment and may involve acquiring or improving skills Performs related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Depending on assignment, work assignments involve working outside and typically fall into one of several categories including, but not limited to, warehousing, and/or engineering and maintenance in HVAC, plumbing, and painting.

Warehousing Assignments

  • Loads and unloads trucks delivering goods to the warehouse.
  • Picks and issues requested stock items from warehouse.
  • Assists in inventory and cycle counts; assists in the rotation and movement of stock.
  • Enters transactions into the Airports Authority data base.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Engineering and Maintenance Assignments (Plumbing and HVAC)

  • Paints fire hydrants, gas meter racks, utility valve covers, etc.
  • May assist Plumbers in preventive maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assists HVAC Mechanics with preventative and corrective maintenance repairs.
  • Cleans machine rooms/shop areas and organizes tools and various equipment and other labor functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Work Assignments

  • Operates common office equipment, such as computers (PCs and Laptops), photocopiers, calculators, telephones, scanners, and printers.
  • May operate/work with two-way radios and/orspecialized equipment and software associated with duties and assigned area, such as computer aided design software.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • [For HVAC and Plumbing only] Enrollment in a vocational school or trade program.
  • [For Warehousing only] Some experience in warehousing or related field.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to useor learn to use common office equipment such as a telephone, multi-function/all-in-one printer, calculator, copy machine, a computer and associated office software such as Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work as a team member, and provide effective customer service.
  • Ability to learn andwillingness to follow daily assignments and instructions, and perform work tasks in a cooperative and safe manner with guidance.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively, to communicate, to understand and be understood.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using tools and equipment associated with the trade.
  • A state driver’s license in good standing.

EDUCATION

  • A high school diploma, a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED), or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

  • May work outdoors up to 90% of the time. May be exposed to all types of weather.
  • Workday may begin at 6:30 AM.
  • Work may require an ability to lift, push/pull or position items weighing up to 40 pounds and/or specific course work, knowledge, or training, depending on the specific assignment.
  • Work assignments require a neat, professional appearance and may require wearing a uniform.
  • Work assignments may require standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and reaching, and are typically in airport terminals and/or areas where there is constant noise and many people. May need to climb ladders or work on roofs.
  • Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
