Arts in Mind Education Innovation Scheme

Overview

This scheme aims to bring together educators in IOPPN with selected artists and cultural practitioners in order to explore creative, arts-based responses to key educational challenges. Following the initial workshop, applications are invited for funding of £3,000 -£5,000 to pilot a collaborative education innovation in Summer/Autumn 2017.

The initiative aims to develop new arts-based approaches to learning and teaching in the faculty and as such focusses on the professional development opportunities offered to both artists and academics as well as the impact on student learning and wellbeing. We hope that the legacy for the faculty will be a broader repertoire of delivery and assessment methods, and a tried-and-trusted network of artists and cultural practitioners.

The scheme will therefore emphasise:

  • An equal and reciprocal collaboration between academic and cultural partners. This, we feel, is essential for ensuring the educational and clinical relevance of the initiatives, and for fostering new ideas, innovationsand professional development on both sides;
  • Active engagement of the students in creative activitiesdirectly relevant to their studies and clinical experiences and, where possible, their involvement as co-designersand developers of the initiatives.

What next? Process and timeline

Team forming and ideas development (spring term)

Following workshop 1, the Cultural Institute will provide ongoing assistance to match educators and artists and to help you develop your collaborative ideas.

Proposal surgeries will be held at Denmark Hill in late March for those who have some idea of what they would like to work on and with whom. We will email you dates/times/locations shortly after workshop 1.

Submission of proposals (deadline 21st April 2017)(See Annex 3)

Proposal teams should involveat least oneacademic and at least one artist/cultural partner. We also welcome applications from teams including, where appropriate, students, the public, and service users. The proposed project must include engagement with registered King’s students, face-to-face or online, including PhD students and students on clinical placement. You can bid for up to 5k to pilot an initiative in Summer 17/ Autumn 18.

The selection panel will take place in early May (made up of senior staff from IOPPN and Cultural Institute).

R&D (Early Summer 2017)

Project Initiation

Successful project teamscomplete their project initiation document. This will form the basis of the funding agreement between CI and the academic lead, and artist’s contracts (overseen by the Cultural Institute). It will also provide a clear plan for all involved and will includekey action points, roles and responsibilities, ethical approval, reporting mechanisms, student recruitment strategies, and guidance on drawing down costs.

Evaluation workshop

Successful teams are asked to attend a short evaluation workshop (date TBC) facilitated by Dr Sharon Markless from the King’s Learning Institute. This will help teams to develop a robust evaluation plan with relevant data gathering built in from the start of the project. It is also an opportunity for teams to meet and share ideas.

Team R&D

Project teams design the initiative ready for delivery in Summer/Autumn Term 2017.

Delivery. (Summer/Autumn 2017)

Pilots are expected to run in Autumn 2017, although some projects may be delivered in Summer 2017 where appropriate. There is no restriction on contact hours or level of students targeted. The initiative could, e.g. involve students at all levels in a one-day workshop, or take the form of a short programme of workshops with a targeted student group.

Evaluation – Spring Term 2018

The project report proforma should be supplied shortly after completion of the pilot, indicating what took place and who participated. This will inform comms support for each project provided by the Cultural Institute. Evaluation forms, designed in collaboration with KLI, should be completed by end of May 2018.

Dissemination

Project teams will be encouraged to disseminate their findings within the Faculty, e.g. the Arts in Mind Festival, and also at King’s-wide events such as the KLI Learning and Teaching Conference. Project reports will be shared via the Cultural Institute resource area.

Appendix 1 - Challenge areas/strategic themes:

  1. Supporting students to engage in Reflective Practice.
  2. Supporting students to self-identify and share mental health issues.
  3. Supporting students to develop patient empathy and self-care.
  4. Supporting students to develop creativity in academic work

Appendix 2- Criteria for Proposals

Strong applications will:

  • Propose a high quality and original learning and assessment pilot that clearly address the key educational challenges provided; (See Appendix 1)
  • Involve close and ongoing collaboration betweenacademic/clinical staff and artists/cultural practitioners (where appropriate, projects involving the public and service-users are welcomed);
  • Develop an enhanced understanding of arts -based approaches to learning and teaching and their potential to enrich education that can be shared more widely with colleagues in the faculty;
  • Develop the professional practice of both the artists and the King’s faculty involved;
  • Offer an indicative evaluation and dissemination plan, including the type of evidence/feedbackthat might be gathered throughout the project and specific platforms for sharing the findings, e.g. the KLI annual conference on Learning and Teaching.
