Arts for Social Justice Partnership Program

SCU•Presents and College of Arts and Sciences

2016 -2017 Call for Proposals

SCU•Presents Arts for Social Justice (ASJ) announces the availability of funds to support projects that focus on the arts and social justice. The purpose of this program is to give Santa Clara University students, faculty, and staff the means and opportunity to be a catalyst for change. Arts for Social Justice is a collaborative, interdisciplinary initiative whose mission is to raise awareness about critical issues addressing the human condition, through the creation of and participation in a wide variety of art forms. Our goal is to support the creation of projects, programs, presentations and events, both on and off campus, that use a performing or visual art form to foster dialogue and action in the community.

We encourage you to think beyond what has been done before, and find new ways to approach and explore your chosen art and social justice topic. We encourage students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds across the Santa Clara University campus to challenge themselves – exploring ideas that may reach into multiple curriculums or ideas that may not have to do with your major/department. Think outside the box.

The goal of the SCU•Presents Arts for Social Justice is to raise awareness of any social justice topics that address the human condition—ranging from homelessness to racial inequality and social/economic inequality—and bridge the gap between life at SCU and other communities. Past projects have dealt with many different topics, from human trafficking presented through the SCU student play, HAPA Cup of Sugarto a collaboration by SCU faculty and students with Del Mar High school students to address, through visual art, issues of immigration and discrimination. For more examples of past project, visit

FUNDING

Proposals are usually funded in the range of a few hundred dollars, up to a few thousand dollars, but there are no limits to requests. The projects are about creativity and how much they tie the art form and the social justice issue together. The amount of funds awarded will depend on the number and quality of proposals submitted for this academic year.

ASJ funds may be requested for not only the art activity, but also a variety of support activities including, for example, the costs to bring professional artists on campus, covering their transportation, lodging, meals, and honoraria, production costs of event (e.g., projectionist for film screening, accompanist for vocalist/instrumentalist), supplies to develop the art and costs related to producing flyers and brochures as well as advertisements to promote the event. Student applicants must have the support of a faculty or staff advisor. New projects may receive funding preference.

Funding will generally NOT be provided for:

  • Equipment, supplies, materials or assistance normally obtained through University, College, or Department budgets
  • Programming that would normally occur within a particular University unit
  • Projects or events that have already been completed prior to the specified time frame

  • General hospitality expenses, such as food and beverages for openings, receptions or benefits.

  • Scholarship assistance for academic credit.
  • Applications for projects primarily for academic credit.
  • Fund raising efforts, such as social events or entrepreneurial activities.
  • Application for projects that primarily support political candidates or institutions.
  • Arts activities, which are essentially recreational or vocational.
  • Requests for artists’ fees when information about the artists and samples of the artists’ work has not been included in the support materials.

SCU students, faculty and staff, organizations, offices, departments, programs, and units are eligible to request funding. Students must have a faculty or staff advisor.
