From 14 June to 14 September 2014 Tullie House is hosting an exhibition of works byRichard Slee.

As one of Britain’s most important contemporary ceramic artists, Carlisle born Richard Slee challenges conventional notions of ceramic art. The playful objects he produces are inspired by familiar objects in our daily lives.

Tullie House and Prism Arts would like to inviteartists to submit ideas to create a piece of work in response to the exhibition. The commission is open to Outside In registered artists or artists experiencing barriers to accessing mainstream arts opportunities because of disability, health or social circumstance.

One artist will be selected and awarded £650 toproduce a new work to be included in the exhibition. The successful artist will have access to Prism Arts Studio to create the work if needed.

Eligibility

Open to previous entrants of Outside In:North West Exhibition, artistsregistered on the Outside In website or eligible under Outside In/ Prism Arts criteria: artists facing barriers to accessing mainstream arts opportunities, because of disability, health, social circumstance or because their work does not conform to what is normally considered as art.

The award

The winning artwork will be displayed within the exhibition; one cheque of £650 will be awarded towards the cost of making the artwork. Studio Space will be available at Prism Arts spaces opposite Tullie House (excluding Monday and Friday). Artist mentoring will be available from Prism Arts if required.

Guidance

The objective is to; enhance, extendor interpret Richard Slee’s work and themes and it’s position within ceramic and contemporary art. Applicants are also encouraged to research and demonstrate understanding of Slee’s work. The exhibition will open 2 weeks in advance of the deadline allowing applicants the opportunity to view the work. Applicants are welcome to contact Prism Arts or Tullie House to discuss their submissions at any time.

Restrictions

Work in any media is eligible; performance would be exhibited by showing a film you produced on a screen. Tullie House uses Windows not Mac computers. Maximum size of wall mounted work is 1m square. The maximum plinth area is 40cm square. Tullie has a plasma screen, if you want a light box you will have to make it. Wall mounted work should be supplied with mirror plates attached. Any electrical equipment you provide must be PAT Tested. Oil paint must be dry. Surface dry is acceptable.The work exhibited must not adversely affect the conservation conditions in the room; so must not increase the humidity, or dust concentrations. In addition museums have stringent regulations regarding the import of natural materials this is because they can bring in insects.

Terms and Conditions

  1. Selection will be made by a panel includingRichard Slee,staff from Tullie House, Outside In, Arts Council England and Prism Arts
  2. The winner will agree tosupport relevant publicity
  3. The winner will have the opportunity to participate in an informal public talk on 11th August 12.15-1.30pm(not mandatory)
  4. The ownership of the artwork remains the entrant’s
  5. If the artwork is for sale Tullie House will take a commission of 25% of the retail price. The artwork won’t have a price label, but the text ‘work for sale please contact the museum reception’ can be added to a short artist’s statement on the wall
  6. Tullie House reserves the right to modify how the winning artwork is displayed to make a coordinated, coherent exhibition. Or to refuse to show the artwork if it differs significantly from the nature or quality suggested in the application
  7. If insufficient applications are received Tullie House and Prism Arts reserve the right to cancel the commission
  8. The work will be available for exhibition as part of Prism Arts C.Art Gallery from 14 September – 28 September 2014
