PRESS RELEASE

ARTE LAGUNA PRIZE: MANY INNOVATIONS FOR THE EIGHT EDITION

Venice, 6 June 2013 - Arte Laguna opens its call for entries for the eight edition of the international contest based in Venice that sees the participation of artists from all over the world.

The venue of the main exhibition that will be on view in March 2014 is once again Venice Arsenale, accompanied by a second area in the heart of the city that will host the digital art works. In fact the collaboration with the Telecom Italia Future Centre, started last year, is continuing in order to provide visibility to the creations featuring the combination between art and new technologies.

A third show floor dedicated to a special selection of the young under25 artists will be set up at the Romanian Institute of Culture and Humanistic Research of Venice.

In addition to cash prizes for a total amount of 35,000 Euros, the strong point of Arte Laguna Prize lies again in its art residencies, that this year are 6 thanks to the introduction of two new partners that add to the Glass School Abate Zanetti in Murano, the Slovenian festival Art Stays, the loft of the marble company Miramarmi in Vicenza and the Mumbai residency. The first new partner is the historic artistic Foundry Battaglia in Milan, where some of the works by the greatest international artists such as ArnaldoPomodoro or Giovanni Penone were created: here the selected artist will give life to his or her project through bronze fusion; the second new collaboration involves the town of Nurnberg and it features an exchange between Venetian and German artists, with a one-month stay at a castle and atelier, the contact with the local artistic environment and a final vernissage.

Into the Arte Laguna network, precisely among the “Business for Art” prizes, also Riva has entered, the furniture company based in Cantù, which since the Twenties has been making products that defy the passing of time and respect nature. Through Arte Laguna Prize the artists will be able to present their ideas for the creation of an object where the “briccola” wood coming from the Venetian lagoon is the protagonist, and then create it at the company. The object will be then presented at Salone del Mobile in Milan in April 2014.

Another important innovation is the new collaboration formula with galleries, called “Artist in gallery”. This edition features five selected international galleries that will choose an artist with whom they will organize a personal exhibition in their venue, accompanied by a grant of 500 Euros.

Artists can apply by 30 October 2013 for one of the five sections of the competition (painting, photographic art, sculpture and installation, performance and video art, virtual and digital art), their works will be then evaluated and selected by a jury of international experts, including directors of foundations and museums, and independent curators. The overall winners will be announced in March 2014 during the opening of the finalists exhibition.

The official opening of the competition will take place publicly during the Art Night, the white night of art in Venice, on Saturday, June 22nd. The location of the event will be the charming cloister of the Telecom Italia Future Centre in campo San Salvador. The protagonists of the Arte Laguna Prize evening will be the aliens, who are going to entertain the public with performances, music, screenings, dance and science-fiction readings.
