1.3Analysing the impact of social and cultural influences on designers and their work

2.2Producing a variety of relevant investigative and market research in response to the design brief

2.3Using a variety of materials, techniques and/or technology for creative effect

2.4Developing and refining experimental design ideas, taking account of the design brief requirements

2.5Using design-based problem solving, planning and evaluation skills in the creative process

To pass this assessment you will have to show that you have met these Outcomes and Assessment Standards.

Your assessor will let you know how the assessment will be carried out and any required conditions for doing it.

The assessment task for this Unit is based on developing design ideas for a 3D design area in response to a design brief.

This assessment task will allow you to demonstrate your:

understanding and analysis of designers’ work and the influences on their design practice, and your ability to effectively describe your own work and the work of other designers

ability to produce relevant investigative studies and market research related to the design area

creativity and design skills when developing and refining your design ideas, taking account of the requirements of the design brief

To pass this assessment, you will have to produce creative design ideas and development work in response to a negotiated design brief.

You will do this by selecting two designers and identifying a minimum of two examples of their work which you find interesting and inspiring. You will have to describe their work, identifying the materials, techniques and/or technology they have used, and identify the impact of significant social and cultural influences on their working methods and the designs they produced.

You will then identify the opportunities, issues and constraints in the design brief provided by your assessor. As you do this, you will need to take account of what you have to design and think about any creative choices and options the brief gives you before starting to plan how you might develop your initial design ideas.

You will then produce a variety of investigative design-based and market research, using your chosen designer’s work as inspiration. After this you will review all of your initial ideas, identifying which are most successful and how you might develop them further.

Now you will use a selection of materials, techniquesand/or technology in creative ways to develop and improve two of your initial design ideas. As you do this you will have to remember the design brief requirements. You will be responding to design challenges as you try to find creative and effective ways to realise your ideas.

The worksheet on the following page is one way you could to record evidence of your thinking, as you plan your work and approach, respond to design challenges and reflect on and evaluate your work and ideas.

They are looking for people to develop imaginative design ideas for a/an______.

Design considerations — things to think about

  • First of all, you need to decide what you are going to design. You will then have to choose a specific music style or genre or a film to use as inspiration when developing your design ideas.
  • Your design ideas should be attractive to young people. They can be aimed to appeal specifically to boys, to girls, or to appeal to both boys and girls.
  • Your design ideas should not be too expensive or complicated to produce.
  • Your designs must be ‘fit for purpose’ — they must take account of the main requirements of the design area, and be durable, practical, functional and safe to wear or use (function). Where appropriate, your designs should also take account of the need to fit the human body.
  • Your designs should also be eye-catching and attractive. You should think carefully about what would make an attractive design and be creative in your use of colour and other design elements when developing your ideas (aesthetics).
