METAL SCULPTURE –LOST WAX BRONZE CASTING
Catalog Description:
22– Metal Sculpture-Lost Wax Bronze Casting3 units
(May be repeated 3 times)
Comprehensive introduction to various metal sculpture processes. Mold-making techniques for casting bronze, aluminum, as well as basic welding. Emphasis on 3-dimensional design quality, craftsmanship, and subject matter, with research in the history of traditional and contemporary metal sculpture. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours laboratory.

Expected outcome for Students:
Upon completion of the course students should be able to;
1.Apply the fundamentals of design in creating clay original;
2.Make a rubber mold from that original;
3. Employ the fundamental techniques of lost wax casting;
4.Recognize and identify the attributes of fine craftsmanship;
5. Critique their own work and the work of others;
5. Apply concepts of contemporary sculpture to class projects;
6.Demonstrate individual creative application of personal style (how
the students made the assignment their own).
Course Content:
1. Historical overview of the development of lost wax casting;
2.Employing elements and principles of three-dimensional design and personal style to make an original in clay;
3. Rubber mold making;
4. Wax casting and chasing;
5. Safety procedures in the foundry pouring metal;
6. Metal finishing and patinas;
7.Use of basic tools: alcohol lamp, burnout kiln, metal finishing tools and welding;
8.Individual creative application of personal style (how
the students made the assignment their own).
Methods of Presentation:
1. Formal lectures with slides and video;
2.Individual and group critiques;
3.One-on-one instruction.

1.Typical Assignments:
a.Mold a human face in clay or wax.
b.Mold an animal head in clay or wax.
c.Mold an abstract torso in clay or wax.
d.Compose a Bas Relief.
e. Prepare for foundry terminology quiz.
2.Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
a.Measure improvement of craftsmanship on class projects.
b.Vocabulary quiz on foundry terminology.
c.Individual and group critiques of assigned projects.
d. Individual creative application of personal style (how
the students made the assignment their own).
e.Final critique of student work.
