Around the School: Lesson # 4
Objectives: TLWBAT
· Discuss the different places in a school.
· Identify places by walking around the school.
· Introduce school workers and their jobs.
· Learn about the activities that take place in each area of the school by interviewing the personnel.
Activities
· Build vocabulary by practicing the words from the word bank.
· Teach the names and responsibilities of school workers.
· Take a tour of the school and discuss what is taking place in each area.
· Ask questions such as, “What do we do in the cafeteria?”; “Who works there?”; “What kind of equipment do they use?”
· Prepare for interviews by choosing a site and review who the workers at that location, the type of work they do, and the equipment they use.
· Share the information learned from the interview.
· Relate to personal experience by drawing a picture map of the places they like the best.
· Complete a map by pasting the places around the
school, pages 25 & 26, on page 27.
Extended Activities
· Invite children to make a book about people who work at school. Refer to activity sheets 10 & 11, from Into English! A, pages 28 & 29.
· Put together a Patterned Book, page 30.
Homework
· Complete a worksheet entitled “Around the School”, page 31.
· Write a sentence about someone that works at the school and his or her job.
· Use vocabulary learned to gather information from an adult about their school.
Assessment
· Draw a map of the school.
· Complete a crossword puzzle about school places and people, page 32.
· List the names of school personnel and their job responsibilities.
