Read Across America
We will be participating in the Read Across America Program at the Thomas J. Pappas School for Homeless Children.
12 buses travel over 1200 miles each day to pick the children up and deliver them safely home. Some families live as far away as 20 miles from the school. Children are often sent to school early in the morning without a proper meal. "Pappas Kids" are always given a balanced, complete breakfast as soon as they get to school. Some of our children show up for school with dirty and torn clothes, some with only one shoe. The Pappas School gives them clothing as they need it from our clothing room. Each Pappas child receives at the very least a hygiene kit, socks, underwear, shoes, and two outfits every month. At the end of the day Pappas children are bused back "home". Sometimes the family's location has changed by the end of the school day, requiring the Outreach Department of the Pappas schools to make sure each child returns safely to their current nighttime residence. The following morning, we start all over again. We are only able to provide all of these services with the generous support of our donors.
These children did not choose this lifestyle. Our volunteer coordinator said they are “in desperate need of people to come read to the children. Some of these children are so starved for attention that just reading them a story really lifts their spirits and helps brighten their day.
