25 / Driving in the Rain
Driving in the rain can be very dangerous. In fact, rain is the cause of thousands of accidents each year, especially in Israel. Because it doesn’t usually rain here from April to October, new drivers can get a license without having driven in bad weather.
Here are some road safety tips for rainy days:
•Safety starts before you drive. No matter what time of the year it is, you must check your tires at least once a month, as well as your windshield wipers1.Also check your brake lights regularly because you may have to pay a fine2if they don’t work.
•When driving, keep your eyes on the road at all times and make sure you keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you.
•On rainy days, you should always leave the house 10 minutes early. Give yourself plenty of time. Drive slowly and stay under the speed limit. Speeding is the cause of one third of all traffic accidents in Israel. In rainy weather, speeding is especially dangerous because the roads are very slippery. If you feel your car is about to skid3, reduce your speed slowly.Do not brake suddenly. This is very dangerous, and you can lose control of the car.
•Remember, the first rain of the winter is the most dangerous. During the hot summer, the roadabsorbs4 dirt and a lot of oil from cars. When it rains for the first time, the rain mixes with the dirt and oil to make the roads even more slippery.
•In Israel, you must drive with your lights on between November 1 and March 31. It’s the law, and you will get a fine if you don’t. Be careful when using your lights on full beam5. Don’t forget to lower them when a driver comes in your direction. Lights that are on full beam can blind the other driver and cause an accident.Lastly, remember not to use these lights when it is raining or foggy. They make it harder for you to see the road.
•Sometimes, it rains so hard that you can’t see the road or cars in front of you. When this happens, pull over to the side of the road, leave your lights on and wait for the rain to stop.
There’s one important thing all new drivers should remember: Be responsible and you will keep safe.
