Are You Distracted

Are You Distracted

Luke 10:38 - 42 “Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

What are you living for: For your desires or for Jesus?

As Christians our lives become convoluted…complicated for we have many desires. And though these desires may be noble…they draw us from the feet of Jesus.

Are you sitting at the feet of Jesus?

Luke 10:42 “But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

One thing and Mary chose the right thing…Jesus!!! Have you?

Sitting At The Feet Of Jesus

Mary wanted nothing else but to love Jesus and be with Him; nothing else mattered to her.

She wanted to breathe in Jesus.

She wanted Him more than life.

She loved Him.

She loved being in His presence and that is what she wanted…She wanted Jesus.

So …she sat at His feet and listened to His Words.

Oh how wonderful to sit at His feet and listen to His Words; To see Him…To touch Him…To love Him…To be in His presence.

Mary sat at the feet of Jesus because she loved Him. When Jesus spoke her heart eagerly accepted His Words as Truth and she was lifted to heavenly heights of Joy and Wonderment.

Her life was consumed with her love for Jesus.

The more she loved Him…The more her capacity to love Him increased; and as she loved Jesus she had Power. For love is of God and love is Power; for our God is Power and she was sitting at the feet of God.

Oh how she loved Jesus!!!

But Martha Was Distracted

Did Martha love Jesus?

Oh yes…she loved Jesus!!!

She welcomed Him into her house; she invited others to her house to be with Him!!!

She wanted all to share with Jesus.

She worked hard to prepare a feast for Jesus and her neighbors.

She wanted all to fellowship with Jesus.

Did Martha love Jesus??? Oh yes…she loved Jesus.

But Martha was distracted

She loved Jesus…BUT!!!

She loved Jesus and wanted to do for Him…But she also wanted to bring attention to herself!

She wanted to be noticed by others…by Jesus…for the work she was doing.

She wanted to feel important.

She wanted to bring glory to herself.

Oh yes…Martha loved Jesus but she also loved Praise…She was seeking recognition

She wanted glory for herself…

Martha expected Mary to help…it was Mary’s usual way…sisters help each other:

Luke 10:40 “But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.”

Mary’s help was usual…it was expected.

But today…Mary could not help…for she had chosen the good part.

She had chosen Jesus…Nothing else mattered!!!

She just wanted to sit at His feet and love Him…Mary knew that loving Jesus was more important than anything.

That loving Jesus was true happiness.

That loving Jesus made everything OK!!!

That loving Jesus brought Power…Loving Jesus brought whatever was needed.

Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Mary knew that Jesus wanted love more than sacrifice:

Matthew 9:13 “But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

What Is Love

1 Corinthians 13:4 - 8 4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Mary loved Jesus.

Martha loved sacrifice.

Luke 10:41 41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

Martha had lots on her mind…Martha liked to accomplish things…

Martha was busy for Jesus…for it was what Martha did…She stayed busy.

But Martha was distracted by the world for she was worried and troubled over many things.

Martha wanted attention…She wanted to be noticed. She wanted her work to be acknowledged.

She was busy…distracted…she had much on he mind…much that took her from Jesus.

And as she was distracted from Jesus…she lost her Power…her delight in life…for she was not sitting at the feet of Jesus.

Martha was trying to find the Power in her works…Martha didn’t realize that Mary had the Power.

For Mary knew that Jesus was her sufficiency:

2 Corinthians 3:5 “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;”
2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Mary knew that she needed nothing else but Jesus: Mary loved Jesus with her heart---soul---mind.

She had no desire for herself…except to know Jesus more and more.

All her desires were on Him:

Psalms 37:4 “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

Mary wasn’t distracted by the world … the things of the world.

She wasn’t motivated by the attraction of the world…she was motivated by Jesus.

She loved Jesus…Her heart would sing a song like:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth;
It sounds like music in mine ear, the sweetest name on earth.
It tells me of a Savior's love, who died to set me free;
It tells me of His precious blood, the sinner's perfect plea.
It tells me what my Father hath in store for eve'ry day,
And tho' I tread a darksome path, yields sunshine all the way.
It tells of One whose loving heart can feel my deepest woe,
Who in each sorrow bears a part, that none can bear below.
Oh, how I love Jesus, Oh how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus, Because He first loved me!
Mary was happy in Jesus: She was smiling…She was feeling good…She had peace…She loved Jesus.
Martha was with Jesus:
She loved Jesus…But she wasn’t happy…She was worried…She was troubled…She did not have peace.
She loved Jesus …but… she was distracted.
Mary loved Jesus.
Mary sat at His feet.
Mary listened to His Words…Mary was happy!!!
And Right After This Account in Luke We Find Our Savior Explaining To His Disciples Ho w to Pray:
Luke 11:1 - 4 1And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3Give us day by day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
Prayer is sitting at the feet of Jesus!!!
Prayer is listening to His Words…Reading…Meditating on His Bible.
Prayer is Loving Jesus in Action!!!
Prayer is when God impresses upon us His will and desires for us!!!
Prayer is where our direction and guidance come from!!!
Prayer is where Power comes from!!!
Prayer is where Revival comes from!!!
Our Savior in the garden of Gethsemane: Just hours before His crucifixion prayed for over three hours.
Matthew 26:36 - 46 36Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. 40And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 42He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 43And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 44And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
The disciples…they were not praying…they were sleeping!!!
Casting Crowns wrote a song about “While You Were Sleeping”
It starts off with the city of Bethlehem: The city of our Saviors birth. It tells about the Silent Night
The Savior was born and they were asleep. Jesus had come the Messiah had come and they were asleep.
God in the flesh had been born…and they were asleep: So many in Bethlehem never knew Him…
Never knew His salvation. Salvation had come …and they were asleep.
Then the song moves to Jerusalem…To Calvary.
Jerusalem…while you were sleeping they crucified your Savior…Your Messiah.
They didn’t realize that Jesus is God in the flesh…That they are crucifying their salvation.
While they are sleeping Messiah is going to Calvary.
They were asleep
And then the song says: United States of America; while you are sleeping…rising in the East…
Messiah is coming. He is coming for His Church.
United States of America while you are sleeping Jesus is Coming.
Your Messiah…Your Savior is coming for His Church.
United States of America while you are sleeping you will be left behind.
United States of America while you are sleeping souls will burn in hell.
Jesus told His disciples:
Matthew 26:40 “And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?”
Are you sleeping?
Are you distracted?
Are you a prayer warrior?
Luke 10:42 42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Mary loved Jesus…She sat at His feet…She wanted the best part.
