Task: Explore the “Big Question”: How did we get from respecting women in traditional indigenous society to MMIW today?

How to:Choose a form to explore the Big Question. Examples are:

General:

  • Propose steps for the national Inquiry
  • Propose a plan to improve relationships between the government and Indigenous peoples (Restorative Justice?)
  • Propose a plan for increasing the safety of indigenous women (and men!)
  • Other? See me with your ideas!

Math/Logical

  • Pursuing the implications and consequences of decisions made throughout the the story. Create a consequential board game (role-playing, NOT snakes-and-ladders). Make the game in a format that can be copied easily (playing board no bigger than 11x 17, no three dimensional details) so the class can take time out to play it in several groups.
  • Create a series of word problems and solutions that reflect the cause and consequences in the book.

Musical / Linguistic

  • Write protest songs / anthem around the issue of MMIW

Kinesthetic

  • Create and act out a five minute version of AR, emphasizing lead actors, suspense, mood, issues....

Intrapersonal

  • Find current information on MMIW. Focus on a specific case like Tina Fontaine. Write a personal response to this issue.

Interpersonal

  • Assume the role of a news reporter and conduct a broadcast / interview
  • Chart the principles, events and emotions contributing to the relationship between April and her family and friends throughout the book.

Visual/Spatial

Create a gallery of photos / artifacts related to the issue.
Linguistic

  • Essay topic idea: How can we solve the issue of MMIW?
  • Create aesthetic pieces (poetry, songs, etc.) around the theme
