Apprentice Engineer

The Mid-Hants Railway Ltd.is seeking to employ a highly motivated young personto train in various aspects of engineering as applicable to the restoration and maintenance of steam locomotives in our engineering works at Ropley (SO24 0BL). We would be delighted to receive applications from a diverse range of people.

This exciting opportunity will give the right candidate a thorough and solid engineering craft based skill in the repair and maintenance of locomotives; but which would be applicable to other engineering fields. Through this scheme the railway hopes to find the right people to keep the essential skills alive and long term take over the top jobs in our workshops, or those of other such railways.

Job Specification

You will be responsible to the Apprentice Supervisor; and working with our existing skilled staff as part of a team.You will need to be self-motivated and able to work on your own initiative. Applicants should have good grades in GCSE Maths, English and a science/technical subject. Ideally candidates will have a BTEC Level 2 in Engineering, an equivalent qualification or be able to demonstrate good technical skills whichthey will develop further during this 2 year placement.Whilst previous experience of working as a volunteer on a heritage railway may assist your application, an enthusiasm and passion for heritage railways is essential.

This training opportunity is for a period of two years. You will be primarily engaged in ‘on the job’ training with other members of the team. An individual learning plan will be developed for the successful applicant to ensure a training package is produced to aid their development.

Under the direction of the Mid Hants Railway (MHR) Boiler Shop Foreman and working as part of a team the successful applicant will learn boiler repairs including plate work, welding, riveting etc.

Applicants should consider how they would travel to Ropley and Farnborough, if they were successful as public transport is limited. You must be physically fit as some of this work is dirty and arduous, you should be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Adherence to the railway’s health & safety rules is of paramount importance.

Hours40 hours per week, possibly including some weekend days, with time off during the week in lieu, 4 weeks paid annual holiday.
