To: Health Care Practitioner,
Re: Applicants for Project Overseas through the Nunavut Teachers Association (NTA)
Medical Exam Requirements
To Whom It May Concern,
Please be advised that you may be asked by members of the Nunavut Teachers Association to provide medical assurance of their fitness to participate in an international educator development project – Project Overseas.
- Project Overseas is a joint endeavor by the Canadian Teachers' Federation and its Members to give professional assistance to fellow teachers in developing countries.
- Project Overseas is held during the months of July and August.
- Participants must have a minimum of five years teaching experience in the Canadian Public School System before the Project Overseas assignment begins.
- Started in 1962, with one program in Nigeria, Project Overseas has now assisted teacher organizations in over fifty countries of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the South Pacific.
- With the financial assistance of the Canadian Teachers' Association Federation and its provincial and territorial Member organizations in a single year, as many as fifty to fifty-five volunteers are sent to approximately thirteen countries.
More information on this exciting project can be found at the Canadian Teachers Association website: under the ‘projects link’.
Basically candidates for selection are asked to provide a letter from their medical doctor or health care professional, reporting on the state of their health and their fitness to cope with conditions in a developing country. If they are chosen by the NTA, they may require another medical certificate later in the year for the CTF.
At this point in the application process, the candidate would be best served if he/she can provide a letter from a health care practitioner that provides an overall analysis of the candidate’s state of health in the following areas:
- Vital signs
- Review of the main systems
- Urinalysis/blood work as deemed appropriate by the health care professional
- A review of the past medical history
- A review of any Allergies and implications that arise from them
- Any mental health or social concerns that may be an impediment towards fulfilling the role of a project participant.
Please feel free to contact me for further information.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
