How to make an application to become a Registered Science Technician (RSciTech)
Introduction
The British Psychological Society is licensed by the Science Council to award the title Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) to Members who meet the standards for the award. The steps you need to follow to apply for the award are set out below. Please read these notes carefully before completing the application form.
Eligibility for the Award of RSciTech
Before you begin an application for RSciTech you must either be an Affiliate Subscriber or Graduate member of the British Psychological Society, and have been working in a psychology-based Technician post for at least a year. You also need to identify a referee, who will usually be your supervisor, line manager or a senior colleague familiar with your role. When you are ready to apply, complete the RSciTech application form. You should give a specific example of how you demonstrate each of the 16 competences;considering what you did, why and how usually provides the length and depth required.
We do not require additional supporting evidence such as project reports, standard operating procedures, or training course attendance certificates, but if you feel they may strengthen your application these will be accepted and reviewed.
If possible, please ask your referee to complete the attached Reference Form and please submit the completed form with your RSciTech application. If you are unable to do this for any reason, we will contact your referee on your behalf. In order to expedite the process of obtaining a reference for you, we will use email wherever possible to contact your referee.
Pay a fee of £35; payment methods are shown on the application form.– please note: this fee is annual to maintain your entry on the Science Council Register. It will be added to your main subscription fees, but is payable separately on or around the anniversary of your entry to the Register.
What happens once I have submitted my application?
- Within three working days, we will send you an email message acknowledging receipt of your application.
- All applications for RSciTech status need to be assessed by the Society’s Membership Advisory Group (MAG), which acts under the authority of the Membership and Standards Board. Their role is to assess these applications to ensure that the competences and requirements for an application are appropriately met.
- If you are not satisfied with the decision of the Society, you have recourse to the Society’s Appeals Process. Details are available at

Should the Society receive a complaint against a Registered Science Technician, we will decide whether a breach of the Rules has occurred. Where a breach is found to have taken place, it is likely to result in the removal of the RSciTech title and will normally impact on the Registered Science Technician’s membership of the Society.
Attention is drawn to the responsibilities placed on Society Members and Registered Science Technicians by Paragraph 2(iv) and Paragraph 4.4 of the Code of Ethics and Conduct, which require psychologists to report instances of impairment or misconduct on the part of colleagues where the interests of public protection demand it.

Data Protection– As a Licensed Body, The British Psychological Society is required to transfer the information submitted on this form to the Science Council. Your details will be held on the Science Council register. The publicly available register will include your name, Licensed Body and Registered Science Technician number. The Science Council may wish to use the information you supply in order to be able to communicate with individuals effectively.
