Application for English Department Scholarships

Deadline for receipt of all materials: 5PM Friday, February 24, 2017

Every spring, the English Department awards several scholarships. Amounts ofthe general scholarships listed below vary from year to year (last year, nineawards ranged from $550 to $1000). Occasionally a scholarship is not awarded. We also offer several scholarships, which in recent years have ranged from $275 to $1000, as prizes in writing competitions: The William James Verville Scholarship, and the Charles E. Bull Creative Writing Award require separate writing submissions and involve separate application procedures. Patricia Mapes Andersen Scholarship: for an undergraduate English major or graduate student in English with minimum 3.0 GPA.

William M. Burke Scholarship: for an undergraduate English major with minimum 3.0 GPA.

The Mary A. Hill Scholarship: for an undergraduate English major or graduate student in English with minimum 3.0 GPA and evidence of financial need as determined by federally approved needs analysis.

Sybil Hall Shott Scholarship: for an undergraduate English major or graduate studentin English with minimum 3.0 GPA.

Eligibility: To be eligible for these scholarships, you must

(1) be a declared BA in English major or a BS in Ed. Secondary Education: English major or a graduate student in one of the English Department’s four graduate degree programs (MA, MA-TESL, MFA, PHD);

(2) enroll in courses during the 2017-2018 academic year, when scholarship awards will be disbursed;

(3) by February 24, 2017, have at least sophomore status with a minimum of 6completedhours of NAU English courses beyond composition if you are an undergraduate English major orhave completed9 hours at NAU if you are a graduate student in English.

Materials Required:

1. With this completed “Application” form (front and back), attach a printout of your currentNAU undergraduate or graduate transcript (your unofficial LOUIE transcript is fine, but it should include transfer credit information).

2. Include an up-to-date résumé or curriculum vitae specifying your school record, awards or recognitions, extracurricular and service activities, and/or work experience.

3. Include a statement of approximately 500 words that describes your academic work and your particular interests in English study. This statement might include one or more of the following:

  • discussion of your goals and how an English scholarship will help you attain those goals;
  • a description and evaluation of your progress toward your degree;
  • further exposition of information on your résumé that is particularly relevant to your scholarship application;

The scholarship committee strongly encourages you to submit a clear, inventive, professional-quality statement. Convincingly show us your commitment to English study. The focus and coherence of this submission matter. Develop and explainthe details or anecdotes that you include. And style counts. So carefullyedit and proofread. Where necessary, solicit timely help in revising and polishing writing of this kind.

4. Sign the “NAU’s Scholarship FERPA Statement” printed below.

5. Request two recommendations on your behalf, including at least one from a member of the NAU English faculty. Be sure that your recommenders meet the posted deadline—for scholarship applications: Friday, February 24.You can find a recommendation form at the following link. Release of Information

By submitting the NAUCollege of Arts & Letters Scholarship Application Form you are giving your consent for NAU to release your personal information to donors who will be considering you for scholarships. This includes, but is not limited to, your application information (résumé, letter, etc.) GPA, year in school, financial need, major, etc. Also, should you be selected to receive a scholarship, the donor may request updates of your progress at NAU including GPA, classes taken, financial need, etc. Only donors seriously considering you for scholarships and approved by the NAU Scholarship Office may have access to this information and no information will be provided to any other outside sources. Submission of this interest form confirms that you agree to these terms and conditions.
