An opportunity has arisen for a High Voltage Technician to join the team, within the Engineering Division. The main purpose of the job will be to undertake maintenance, repairs and installation to upgrade, maintain and commission high voltage installations within the Network on the Port’s plant and equipment. Also, to diagnose, rectify and repair faults on electrical control and distribution systems up to and including 11000 volts on the Port’s container handling equipment and electrical distribution network.
Other duties include:-
- Maintaining knowledge of electrical engineering systems and high voltage engineering technology.
- Qualified to ONC level in Electrical Engineering;
- Qualified to City and Guilds I, II and III in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent);
- A Certificate of successful attendance in High Voltage Switchgear Operations; or agreed attendance to undertake these operations;
- Training in Electrical Installation in relevant British or European Standards;
- Prepared to undertake sufficient training to ensure familiarisation of Engineering Plant Licences following plant training;
- An ability to demonstrate experience and proven practical ability in electrical engineering, preferably with experience of cable jointing;
- Prepared to undertake sufficient training to ensure familiarisation with all equipment in service;
- Flexible in their approach to work including flexible work hours and willing to take on change;
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Experience on a range of electrical installations and equipment;
- Experience on High voltage equipment in excess of 1000v;
- Working on fixed installations, substations, HV Circuit breakers and slip ring assemblies, to include planned replacement of 11000v supply cabling and network systems.

High Voltage Technician
Job Summary

Job Purpose /
- As required to undertake maintenance, repairs, installation and upgrades. Maintain and commission high voltage installations within the network on the Ports plant and equipment.
- To diagnose, rectify and repair faults on the High Voltage Network and electrical control and distribution systems up to and including 11000 volts on the Ports container handling equipment.
Description of Duties

- Ensure all maintenance and installation work is carried out effectively and safely.
- Ensure that high voltage installations on the Ports plant and equipment is cost effectively repaired and maintained in a safe manner, with the minimum operational disruption.

Responsibilities for:

- Responsible for own safety and general duty of care for plant operators in consequence of repair work undertaken.
Assets /
- Responsible for safe operation of equipment following repair or modification. Responsible for complex high voltage test and diagnostic equipment as well as own vehicle and mobile telephone.
Finance /
- Responsible for ensuring that the most cost effective route is taken in undertaking modification and repairs, with the minimum parts replaced and the modification or repair completed efficiently.
Decision Making /
- Constantly prioritising workload and scheduling
- Ensure that all maintenance activities enhance equipment performance / reliability and that no actions compromise this, for this purpose analyse equipment performance and highly complex technical information.
- The ability to diagnose complex faults from sometimes limited data and history
- Makes decisions whether equipment is safe to operate.
Communications /
- Routine exchange of information on a day to day basis.
- Regular progress reports on all maintenance, installation and commissioning work.
- Updating engineering planning staff on current status of all ongoing repair work.
Experience & Knowledge
- In dept knowledge of electrical distribution, lighting systems, control instrumentation and installation for quay side crane, rubber tyred gantry cranes and miscellaneous plant and equipment.
- Constantly update own technical knowledge to stay abreast of developing technology.
- In dept experience and knowledge of container handling cranes, general and specific control systems.
- To actively support and participate in Engineering Projects as required.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- City and Guilds I, II and III in Electrical Engineering.
- ONC in Electrical Engineering.
- Certificate of successful attendance in High Voltage Switchgear Maintenance.
- Joint Industry Board (JIB) Electrical Installation and Testing to 17th Edition (or equivalent).
- 3 years experience on wide range of high voltage repairs, installations substations, HV circuit breakers and slip ring assemblies. To include planned replacement of 11000V supply cabling and network systems.
- Specific in-house training and experience of cable jointing systems.
- Full UK Driving Licence and Engineering Plant Licences essential.
- Experience of Electrical Inspection and Testing to BS7671
