The candidate named on the second page of this form is applying for a University of Stirling - Overseas Research Student Award Scheme (ORSAS) for the academic session 2010-11. I should be grateful if you would provide us with a reference on the applicant's academic and general suitability for an award by completing Part 2 on the second page of the form. References should not be returned to the applicant. You may wish to confirm to the applicant that you have sent the reference form as instructed.

It would be of great assistance to the Selection Committee if, in addition to any general statement, you would indicate the following in your reference:

(a) / How long you have known the applicant and in what capacity;
(b) / How the applicant's achievements compare to those of his/her peers;
(c) / The nature and class of degree already obtained or expected to be obtained prior to the commencement of the course;
(d) / For applicants whose first language is not English, their standard of proficiency in written and oral English;
(e) / For applicants who hold professional qualifications or have professional experience, how the qualifications and/or experience would contribute to the applicant's suitability;
(f) / The applicant's general suitability for research study, including distinct strengths or weaknesses;
(g) / Information on any published peer reviewed papers, journal papers or conference papers.

The Scottish Overseas Research Student Award Scheme provide Scholarships for partial remission of tuition fees for overseas research students. Successful applicants will receive an award equal to the difference between the lower home (UK) fee and international fee rate for the appropriate awardholder's course. Further information on the criteria for these awards is available on the web (see below).

DEGREE CLASSIFICATION

In the preparation of this report, it may be helpful for referees at international institutions to be aware that, while not entirely uniform, UK honours degrees are generally classified as first class, second class upper division, second class lower division, third class and pass degree.

2. DEGREE CLASSIFICATION
If the institution’s degree classification structure is not based on the UK system, the information provided in notes on page one shouldbe employed to provide an approximate conversion of the applicant’s award/predicted award to that of the UK system. In that event, it would be particularly helpful if you could also comment on the level achieved by the applicant in his/her degree
3. CLASS RANKING
Where known, enter in the box the applicant’s ranking in his/her class, and in relation to overall size of class (for example, 5/80) /
