To serve the needs of athletes, DeMatha Catholic High School will offer two structured programs of athletic training during the summer months: a six week evening program and two one-week day sessions.
The program is under the direction of Ed King, Chairman of the Physical Education Department at DeMatha. Mr. King graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. He is a Certified Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength Professionals Association and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He has over twenty years of teaching and coaching experience at DeMatha.
Tyronne Turner returns to the staff gain this year. Tyronne is currently the head strength coach at Howard Univ. He is also certified CSCS with the NSCA.
Purpose
The purpose of the camp is to prepare the athlete for the upcoming season and allow him the opportunity to work himself into the best physical shape possible. This objective will be achieved through the use of various conditioning and strength training techniques including but not limited to: speed work, resistance training, agility, bag drills, dot drills cones, plyometrics both upper and lower body flexibility, along with form running. The weight room training will consist of lifts that concentrate on strength, speed, power, and flexibility.
Evening Conditioning Camp
The camp sessions will be held at Hyattsville Middle School starting at 5:30 p.m. and concluding at 7:30 p.m.,meeting four days a week. The week of July 3 camp will meet Mon., Wed., Thur. and Fri. The week of July 10 camp will meet Mon., Tue., Wed., and Thur. All other sessions will meet four days a week with the off day being Wednesday. Athletes and parents are to park in the front of Hyattsville Middle School and proceed to the back of the school where the field is located. Athletes will be grouped together to create a competitive balance and not over matched.
Enrollment is limited so please sign up early.
Weight Room (not part of camp)
The weight room will be open from June 5th to August 4th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. five days a week. On Tuesday July 4th the weigh room will be closed. If you met your monetary requirement during the lift-a-thon the weight room fee is waived. DeMatha students, non-DeMatha students, and college athletes are welcome to use the weight room over the summer for a fee of $95 for the entire summer or $15 per week. Our college alumni athletes can see me for details about a special discount.
Parking
Hyattsville Middle School is located at the corner of 42nd and Oglethorpe St. one block from DeMatha. Please park in the front lot of the school and walk past the basketball courts to the field behind the school.
From the Director
These workouts will not be a walk on the beach. You must be willing and ready to work hard. All camps are one-week sessions but the entire program is progressive. We will start out easy and gradually build to the first week in August. If you attend all six weeks you will catch a coach’s eye. It’s easier to show up in August in shape and ahead of everyone else rather than trying to catch-up and get into shape in the hot days of August.
Registration Selection + Fees
Please circle the appropriate week(s) you would like to attend. If you choose to attend all six weeks pay only for five the sixth week will be free.
