Introduction
The Key Technology Partnership Visiting Fellow at UTS program provides opportunity and support for researchers from UTS’s Key Technology Partners (KTP) to work collaboratively with their colleagues at UTS.
Application deadlines
For the current round of funding – 2014 second round - applications must be submitted by Friday, 30 May 2014. Proposals must be for activity which takes place in 2014. Proposals for activity in 2015 will not be considered in this round of applications.
The Key Technology Partnership Visiting Fellow (KTP VF) nominated must be a high-quality scholar or leader in their field and their visit must be of significant benefit to UTS and the KTP strategy.
Funding
KTP VFs will be provided with up to AU$10,000 (depending on overall actual costs and length of stay) towards travel, accommodation and living expenses incurred during the stay. A stipend or salary will not form part of this scheme, in accordance with Australian visa requirements.
Once an amount has been approved by the DVC (Research) through the International Engagement Office, funds will be transferred and managed by the International Engagement Office. The hosting unit may agree to provide additional funding for actual expenses (not remuneration), provided that they do so in accordance with ATO and visa guidelines. Such funding must be approved by the relevant Faculty Dean or DVC (Research). The hosting unit must also provide a suitable space and facilities for KTP VFs during their stay.
- The KTP VF will be reimbursed for travel expenses (airfares, accommodation and daily living expenses) for the duration of the visit to UTS to the maximum amounts outlined in thisKTPVFapplication form and according to the KTPVF guidelines.
- KTP VFs can only claim the cost of their accommodation and living expenses at the end of the visit. Please note that receipts for all claims are required.
- The final payment will be transferred once the KTP Visiting Fellow Record of Activity has been submitted to the International Engagement Office.
- Other funds (to be retained by the host unit) may be used for activities related to the visit, such as room hire or catering for seminars.
Where additional funds have been approved by the Faculty or Research Strength, arrangements for the use of those funds must be negotiated with the Faculty/Strength. It is important that the maximum allocations to each of the above categories (from all approved funding sources) are confirmed with and approved by UTS Human Resources Unit(HRU)and the International Engagement Office following approval of the nomination, and revised where the total amount of approved funds is different from the amounts requested. The offer of this Honorary Appointment by HRU cannot be made until these amounts are confirmed.
Activities during visit
The intention of the KTP VF program is that it provides an opportunity for academics to develop significant research collaboration. KTP VF funding should be viewed as seed funding to assist with the development of long-term collaboration and applications are expected to demonstrate how the academics involved in the proposal will achieve this.
Expectations are that KTP VFs will engage in the following ways with their UTS colleagues, before, during and after their visit:
- Develop with their UTS host(s) research collaboration on a significant scale, that involves other colleagues at both institutions, including Early- and Mid-Career Researchers
- Develop a plan to apply for external funding to ensure the long-term viability of the proposed collaboration
- Provide opportunities for research students to be co-supervised, either as dual or joint PhD candidates (where such agreements exist with KTPs) or through shorter visits by PhD candidates to the partner institution
- Contribute to the development of UTS HDR students in their host unit through engagement at postgraduate seminars and other forums
- Acknowledge UTS in any publications or presentations that result from research conducted during the stay
- Conduct seminars, workshops or other forums presenting their research work, providing an overview of their home institution, and outlining opportunities for ongoing collaboration.
- Provide feedback on their experiences of the exchange,
UTS will support and promote visiting fellows through a number of mechanisms, including:
- Working with UTS hosts before the visit to help identify opportunities to engage with academics throughout UTS
- Helping to identify possible sources of external funding in the relevant research area
- Promoting the visit through research web pages, email broadcast and other internal media opportunities (e.g., U:Magazine)
- Providing a suitable space and facilities for KTP VFs to conduct effective research during their stay
Australian visa
It is a condition of accepting a KTP VF position that the visiting scholar obtains the appropriate visa to visit Australia. UTS HRU will provide a letter of appointment which includes information on obtaining a visa. It is the responsibility of the KTP VF to apply for an appropriatevisa, including planning appropriately for the time it will take in the KTP VF’s home country for the visa application to be processed. Please note a Tourist Visa or E-Visa is not an appropriate visa to visit UTS through the KTP VF program.
Delays in visits
Visits are generally expected to take place at the time indicated in the application. It is recognised that, on occasion, unforeseen circumstances maylead to visit date changes. This is acceptable provided notification is provided to the International Engagement Office; however, visits must take place in the calendar year for which funding has been awarded.
If an approved visit cannot take place in the calendar year for which funding has been awarded, a new application for funding must be submitted for funding in the following year. Such applications will be reviewed on the same basis as all other applications for funding received in that funding round and will not be given special consideration.
