The purpose of consulting independent external assessors is to indicate to the Committee how the candidate’s standing in the academic community has made an impact outside their immediate circle. It follows, therefore, that it is not in the candidate’s interest to nominate independent external assessors who are too close to the candidate, for example ex-supervisors, collaborators or co-authors, or anyone who has recently had a direct involvement with him/her.The Head of School/Research Institute Director should aim for a selection of independent external assessors who will provide the committee with a balanced view across the full range of the individual’s work and the case for promotion.
It may be that some of the independent external assessors are based outside the United Kingdom especially where the case is being made for international distinction. All independent external assessors should be external to Keele[2] and hold a Professorial title.
Nominations for referees are as follows:
Promotion / Minimum number of assessorsnominated in case / Minimum number to be contacted / Minimum number required for decision

[1]PERCENTAGE OF GRANT ATTRIBUTABLE TO CANDIDATE
Where you are not the only investigator involved in the bid (see question 2) please give an estimate of the proportion of personal contribution made by you in obtaining the grant. For example, if you were one of four investigators involved in the bid and your input was evenly split, your contribution would be 25%. However, this would be higher if your contribution was greater.
[2]External to Keele would be identified as not currently working at the University or those who have left within the last 3 years
