Apple Valley School Homework
Choose and highlight one activity from each area below to earn 10 Graduation Points
per activity. Activities will be accepted and shared daily. All projects due by Tuesday, June 19th.
Writing
1. Write four creative FATE cards to be used for Apple Valley. Don’t’ forget to write the points won or lost. Ask your teacher for index cards for this.
2. Print each Personal Word from one side of your PWL yellow spelling list on binder paper.
3. Make a quill pen from a large feather. Dip it in ink (paint) and write a sentence with it.
4. Use a piece of charcoal to write on a small piece of a brown paper bag. Write a sentence or two about pioneer schools.
5. Write a poem or short story about life in a one-room school. Share it aloud.
6. Write a short play with two or three characters about pioneer life. Be prepared to act it out in class with the help of other students.
Reading
7. Read a book about pioneer life. Report on the book orally and/or in writing.
Your teacher can suggest some appropriate titles.
8. Bring in old books which might have been used in schools of long ago. Share a favorite page with the class.
9. Research online about a particular person or event from the 1850’s. Bring in a copy of what you discovered.
Art
10. Illustrate your favorite scene from a pioneer book you read. Share it with the class.
11. Make a diorama of a one-room schoolhouse (3-D scene in a shoe box).
You may show the inside and/or outside view.
12. Draw and color a pioneer boy and/or girl wearing common clothes of the time.
13. Make your own dunce cap by rolling a paper into a cone shape. Decorate it.
14. Make a sock puppet or a paper doll of a character from a pioneer book you’ve read.
Math
15. Write out your multiplication tables for 6’s, 7’s, 8’s, 9’s, and 12’s on your own
paper (example: 6x1=6 through 6x12=72).
16. Create two math word problems that involve Apple Valley School such as:
“The Lee Family donated four bushels of apples from their farm to the school. Each bushel had five dozen apples. How many apples did they donate in all?” Next, solve your problem. Don’t forget, each problem needs a question.
17. Prepare a “Diary For A Day” time schedule for your present time school day and one for
a pioneer student’s day. What time do you wake up? Chores? Time for school? After
school activities then and now? Homework? Dinner? Bedtime?
18. Write down a favorite “old fashioned” family recipe, such as apple pie, oatmeal cookies,
or chicken and dumplings. You are welcome to prepare the recipe and share it with the
class to earn 20 extra Graduation Points.
