The department / Department has 3 Consultants (plus a vacancy which will recruit early 2015). 2 consultants cover the inpatient unit (SL/AK)
Currently2 SpRs, 1 GPVTS and 1 hospice doctor (0.6 WTE)
Inpatient unit has 28 beds (2 wards of 14 beds each). Occupancy varies but usually around 80%. Also have large community team but trainee will spend majority of time on inpatient wards.
Patients have wide variety of diagnoses, malignant and non- malignant and are at varying stages of their illness.

The type of work to expect and learning opportunities / FY1 doctors will spend majority of time on inpatient unit. Daily ward round of all patients with consultant/ SpR/ GP VTS or Hospice doctor.
Main role in symptom management, end of life care including advanced care planning, discharge planning and communication with friends and family. Also see new admissions to inpatient unit and attend weekly IDT meetings.
Consultants always available for advice and often review patients on days other than formal ward round day.

Main duties of the placement / The F1 doctor is responsible with other members of the team for the ward care of patients and the maintenance of the patient’s medical record. Ward rounds are daily. Also responsible for clerking of new patients to the inpatient unit, communication with family/ carers and with other healthcare professionals.
Typical working pattern in this placement / Daily:
0900 Admissions meeting
0915 Nursing handover
0930 Ward work and ward round
Afternoon clerking of new admissions
1700 handover to on call
In addition-
Tuesday or Thursday (depending on ward working on) 1400 Ward IDT
Wednesday 0930 Complex psychosocial meeting
Every second Monday at 1200 Journal club
No on call commitment
