Appendix B: Spanish Immersion Service Design

Students are admitted into the Spanish Immersion program through an application and selection process. The process begins with a parent informational meeting where parents are provided the applications and information regarding the process by which students are chosen for the program.

Students are chosen for the Spanish Immersion program by a tiered lottery after it is established that the applicants meet the entrance criteria. The entrance criteria are noted on the Spanish Immersion program Guidelines and Parent Contract.

Students are served in a self-contained classroom beginning in the first grade. With the exception of the ancillary classes in 1st and 2nd grade; teachers deliver instruction completely in Spanish while using second language acquisition methodologies such as sheltered instruction. Kinesthetic activities are provided by Spanish Immersion teachers so as to make the content comprehensible. Students work in collaborative groups to provide the scaffolding needed to allow students to be successful in the second language. Supports such as homework explanations for parents in English are provided by teachers in order to extend the learning at home.

Students in the program are evaluated by the same grade level report card as their district peers. Additionally, progress reports regarding proficiency in the second language are also provided.

Spanish Immersion Service Design Findings:

The application for the Spanish Immersion program was found to have some bias such as teacher recommendation and a requirement of both parent signatures. The guidelines and parent contract were found to be inconsistent between the two campuses that offer the Spanish Immersion program.

The process by which exceptions made for students entering the program or exiting the program were found to be inconsistent between the two campuses.

In reviewing demographic data, Spanish Immersion students that are Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander represent averages that are comparable to the campus average. There is a significant difference in representation of White and African American students. The percentages of White students were above the campus percentages and the percentages of the participating African American students were under the percentages represented at the campuses.

Participating Economically Disadvantaged Spanish Immersion students represented were significantly lower than campus percentages. The differences range between 8-15 %.

Participating Special Education students were significantly lower than the campus percentages. The differences noted range from 6 – 8%.

Overall, 5% more females participate in the Spanish Immersion program than do males. This difference widens as students enter into middle school where there is 40% difference in the 6th grade. This could be attributed to males wanting to pursue athletic interests at the cost of continuing their language studies.

Data is still being collected to determine effectiveness of service design.

Spanish Immersion Service Design Plan of Action:

The Spanish Immersion Guidelines and Parent Contract will need to be reviewed in order to align both campuses with the district vision for the program. A committee will need to be formed in order to fairly make decisions regarding students not meeting program expectations. Guidelines for this committee should be established.

Due to dissipating student participation in the middle school years, an investigation into providing opportunities for students to pursue athletics and continue their studies of advances Spanish classes will be should be conducted.
